Satyadev Dubey was a theatre director, writer, film actor, playwright, screenwriter and director, born on July 13, 1936 in Bilaspur district, Madhya Pradesh, British India. He went to Mumbai for higher studies; attain a degree in English literature. He dreamt of becoming a cricketer, but became interested in theater and joined the Theatre Unit, a theatre group. He took over the theatre and produced many plays. He produced Girish Karnad`s first play Yayati, Hayavadana, Badal Sarkar`s Ebang Indrajit and Pagla Ghoda, Mohan Rakesh`s Aadhe Adhure, and A Raincoat for All Occasions and Jean Anouilh`s Antigone. His play Dharmavir Bharati`s Andha Yug brought in a new paradigm in Indian theatre. He made two short films and directed a Marathi feature film too.He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1971. He won the 1978 National Film Award for Best Screenplay for Shyam Benegal`sBhumika and 1980 Filmfare Best Dialogue Award for Junoon. In 2011, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. He wrote dialogues for Ankur (1974), Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain (1974), Nishant (1975), Bhumika (1977), Junoon (1978), Kalyug (1980), Aakrosh (1980), Vijeta (1982) and Mandi (1983).
