Shankar Singh Raghuwanshi (Shankar) was a music director and composer, well known as the Shankar of the famous Shankar Jaikishen duo of Indian film industry. He was born on October 5, 1922 in Punjab Province, India. He started learning tabla and played it in the Prithvi Theaters. He meet Jaikishen in an office, where he used to visit for an opportunity and soon become friends. They became orchestra musicians at Prithvi Theaters. He collaborated with Jaikishen and made his debut with the name of Shankar-Jaikishen in 1949 from Raj Kapoor’s movie, Barsaat. The music made a hit and they became the most promising music directors of the era. The duo won nine Filmfare Best Music Director Awards and the Padmashri by the Government of India in 1968. After the death of Jaikishen, in 1971, Shankar continued the work in the joint names only. He died on 26 April 1987 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, due to heart attack. On 3 May 2013, A postage stamp was released by Indian Post to honor the duo.
