One among the most popular filmmakers in contemporary Punjabi cinema, Simerjit Singh began his showbiz journey in Bollywood. He debuted as an assistant director with the romantic comedy
Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (1998), which was directed by
Anees Bazmee and starred
Ajay Devgan and
Kajol in the lead roles. In the years that followed, Simerjit assisted filmmakers like Anil Devgan in Raju Chacha (2000) and Rohit Shetty in Zameen (2003) before eventually making his independent directorial debut with Chak Jawana (2010), which he also wrote.
The comedy Daddy Cool Munde Fool (2013) was Simerjit`s sophomore outing as a director, and was a critical and commercial success. The director was shot into the pinnacle of Punjabi cinema when his fourth film, the historical romantic drama Angrej (2015), opened to near-universal critical acclaim and went on to become one of the highest grossing Punjabi films of all time. This was followed by Nikka Zaildar (2016) and its sequel Nikka Zaildar 2 (2017), both of which did phenomenally well at the box office besides being well-received in all quarters.
In 2018, Simerjit helmed the biographical war drama Subedar Joginder Singh, which starred Gippy Grewal and Aditi Sharma in the lead roles and Mar Gaye Oye Loko. His 2019 releases include
Muklawa and
Nikka Zaildar 3.
