Having started his career as a cinematographer, Sunil Sharma has been a part of the film industry for close to four decades, making his debut in 1982 with Saath Saath. He then went on to be associated with Raahee and Insaniyat as a cinematographer, meanwhile, he made his debut as a producer in 1987 with the movie Hiraasat. Debuting as a director in 1996, Sunil directed the Hindi movie Himmat, starring Shilpa Shetty Kundra and Sunny Deol.

Stepping into the shoes of an actor, Sunil was then seen playing a supporting role in the Telugu movie Anjani Putrudu in 2009, marking his acting debut. Post this, he featured in two other Telugu movies - Hanuman Chalisa (2010) and Chilkur Balaji (2018). Meanwhile, he continued to be associated as an executive producer on movies and has Road to Sangam, Singh Saab The Great, and Loveshhuda to his credit.
