About
The first male actor to win the Oscar, Emmy, and Tony Awards Thomas Mitchell was an American actor, director, playwright, and screenwriter. In his four-decade-long acting career, Mitchell appeared in several memorable roles - as Gerald O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939), Doc Boone in Stagecoach (1939), Uncle Billy in It's a Wonderful Life (1946) and Mayor Jonas Henderson in High Noon (1952).

Mitchell began his professional acting career in 1913 but it was in 1937 that he struck gold with his performance in Frank Capra's Lost Horizon. His breakthrough performance opened doors to Hollywood and in the same year he earned his first Academy Award nomination for the movie The Hurricane. However, the following year Mitchell gave another appealing performance in the movie Stagecoach (1939) and bagged his maiden Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the movie. He would later in 1953 win the Emmy Award for Best Actor for his role in the medical drama The Doctor and a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role as Dr. Downer in Hazel Flagg. This made him the first male actor to win the three awards - Academy, Emmy, and Tony. Few of his other notable films include Swiss Family Robinson (1940), Moontide (1942), The Keys of the Kingdom (1944), and High Noon (1952).

Thomas Mitchell died on December 17, 1952, at the age of 70 from peritoneal mesothelioma.
