Vijay Chavan is the son of Lavani Samradnyee Smt. Sulochana Chavan. He listened to the records of his mothers songs and practiced with the contemporary dholaki players Shri. Anna Joshi, Shri Lalbhau Gangawane, Sri. Pandit Widhate and S hri. Baban Kale. Later he started accompanying his mother and did recordings in Akashwani Mumbai. He played dholaki with renowned Hindi, Marathi and South Indian music directors like IIIay Raja, Anand Milind, Annu Malik, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Bappi Lahiri, Ram Laxman, Ram Kadam, Ajay Atul, Vitthal Shinde, Ashok Patki, etc. He even played the Jugalbandi with international artists along with Zakir Hussain. Vijayji cam also play Chanda, dimdi, Halgi, duff and bagalbaccha dhol.
Vijay Chavan, from a strong family tradition of Indian folk drumming and singing, is one of the leading exponents of the Dholki, the premier folk instrument of Maharashtra. He plays other folk instruments including duff, Chanda, halgi and the dafali. A popular concert artist, he is also highly sought after by famous composers of music for Hindi, Marathi and Tamil Films
