With a career that spanned over five decades, Yash Chopra established himself as the quintessential romantic filmmaker in Bollywood. Yash Chopra moved to Mumbai and assisted I. S. Johar. Two years later, he landed his first film as a director, Dhool Ka Phool (1959). Yash Chopra was catapulted to fame and instant stardom with the film Waqt (1965) for which he received his first Filmfare Award. He has two sons, famed producer-director Aditya Chopra and actor-filmmaker Uday Chopra. Yash Chopra grew up in Lahore and was the youngest of eight children. His brother Baldev Raj Chopra, was a film journalist. In 1971, Chopra founded Yash Raj Films, which is the largest entertainment company in India. He directed the film Deewaar (1975), which dispelled several stereotypes. He then moved away from drama and action and directed the romantic film Daag (1973). His movies soon became a veritable genre in themselves, with masterpieces such as Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Trishul (1978), Kaala Patthar (1979), Silsila (1981) and Chandni (1989). He was the visionary who made movies like Lamhe (1991), Darr (1993), Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997) and Veer Zaara (2004), all of which went on to become cult classics. Chopra has been credited with cementing the status of Bollywood`s living legends - Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. Yash Chopra won 12 Filmfare Awards, 6 National Awards and had also been honoured with the Padma Bhushan (2005) and the Legion of Honour (2008). In October 2012, Indian cinema lost a maestro when Yash Chopra succumbed to a long illness. His last film was Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012). With an amazing legacy, Yash Chopra lives on through the silver screen.
