Synopsis: A city is falling apart. Businesses are shutting down, jobs are disappearing, violence is spreading, and nobody quite knows who is still in charge. In the middle of this chaos, a group of struggling small businesses comes together under the shelter of a seemingly benevolent NGO. Loans are arranged, markets are created, livelihoods are rebuilt. Everyone is grateful.
Until they need protection.
Enter Arturo Ui, a failed gangster with little left except a name, a handful of loyal men, and a desperate need to matter. When a video of his vulnerability unexpectedly goes viral, a group of businessmen sees an opportunity. They give him a chance to make a comeback.
What begins as a small arrangement soon becomes something much bigger.
With the help of businessmen, gangsters, social media, manufactured crises and a public hungry for someone to believe in, Ui slowly transforms himself from a nobody into a force the city cannot ignore. Violence becomes protection. Fear becomes security. Propaganda becomes truth. And as the city watches, likes, shares and argues, the people who helped create Ui discover that power has a peculiar habit of changing hands.
A darkly comic, physical and contemporary adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, set in a Mumbai where economic uncertainty, political instability, organised crime and the machinery of public perception collide.
The question is not how a gangster rises to power. It is how many ordinary people help him get there.
