About The Event
The story takes place over a single rainy day at the isolated estate of Helen Alving, a wealthy widow in western Norway. Helen is preparing to dedicate a newly built orphanage in honor of her late husband, Captain Alving, who is revered by the community as a moral pillar of society.
However, behind closed doors, Helen harbors a dark secret. She confesses to her idealistic spiritual advisor, Pastor Manders, that her marriage was an absolute nightmare. Captain Alving was actually a cruel, depraved profligate who indulged in endless affairs, even fathering an illegitimate child with their former housemaid. Helen endured decades of misery, hiding his vices to protect the social reputation of the family. She built the orphanage purely to exhaust the wealth of her husband so their returning son, Oswald, would inherit nothing stained by the money of his father.
