About The Event
The play `Girija Kalyana`, written by theatre and film director B. Suresh, is not a traditional mythological story. Rather, it is a very influential modern play woven around the current Indian farmer suicides and agricultural crisis with deep social concerns.
The play revolves around an innocent young woman named Girija. She is obsessed with commercial films, especially the legendary Kannada actor Dr. Rajkumar. She lives in the fictional world of the film world, insisting that she will marry her "hero" just like him.
Finally, her parents convince her to marry a simple and realistic farmer named Nani. Both of them lack maturity and fail to take on the real responsibilities of the family, and their lives soon fall into financial difficulties.
Poor crop yields and the burden of chasing impossible dreams cause Nani to fall into a deep debt trap. Unable to repay the loan to the lender, he eventually commits suicide.
The second half of the play follows Girija`s struggle with reality. It highlights how she has to compromise her core moral values in order to receive government compensation for her husband`s death.
The play is a scathing critique of modern rural distress, the burden of debt, and the dangers of living in illusion. It contrasts the fictional life glorified by the media with the harsh reality faced by the farming community in India.
