Hamlet, (The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark) is one of the world's most performed plays written by Shakespeare. The urge to do it in the present time, lies in the famous words of the Bard, to be or not to be - the question that haunts those whose conscience is alive.
Jigisha and Ashtavinayak have recently done the first Trilogy on Marathi stage, Wada Chirebandi has now decided to bring the world classic in Marathi. By presenting this play, Zee Marathi is stepping into the world of Marathi Theatre.
The play is directed by veteran director, Chandrakant Kulkarni.
On the surface it is the story of revenge, a delayed revenge, so to say. Prince Hamlet comes back to Denmark for the mourning of his father and he has to witness not just the mourning but the celebration of the marriage of his mother, Queen Gertrude to his uncle, King Claudius. The tragedy is initiated by the ghost of Hamlet's father, King Hamlet, who asks for revenge but without harming his wife, mother of Hamlet.
From this moment to the moment when Hamlet finally kills Claudius, it is the journey of a soul that is torn between action and inaction.
To be or not to be
That is the question.
Organized by Jigisha Ashtavinayak.
