Why stage Hamlet in India today?
For me, Hamlet is a profoundly contemporary work. It speaks about power—not only the power we inherit, but also the power we choose to seize, often by stepping outside accepted moral and social boundaries. It is also a play about crime, corruption, and the consequences of human ambition.
What makes Hamlet so relevant today is its reflection of a world in turmoil. Hamlet himself describes a world that feels disordered and impossible to fully comprehend. We live in a similarly noisy, fractured, and unsettled world, where truth is often obscured and uncertainty shapes our lives.
Presenting the play in Hindi allows these questions and conflicts to speak directly to contemporary Indian audiences, making Shakespeare's timeless concerns immediate and accessible.
Working in Hindi with the SRCPA Repertory, I seek to explore these universal questions through a contemporary lens, revealing how Shakespeare's masterpiece continues to resonate with the realities and challenges of our time.
