About The Event
Kaatriniley Varum Geetham is India's first theatrical musical bio-play in Tamil that traces the legendary life, struggles, and monumental musical journey of the iconic Carnatic vocalist and Bharat Ratna recipient, M.S. Subbulakshmi.
The play is produced by Three Entertains, a prominent theatre company founded and owned by the creative duo Lavanya Venugopal and M.V. Bhaskar.
The story starts in Madurai, where MS Subbulakshmi was affectionately known as Kunjamma, is born into a traditional Devadasi family of musicians. It explores her childhood determination to break rigid barriers and train as a vocalist at a time when women from her background were actively barred from occupying centre stage.
The timeline covers her first recording, her growth from Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi into the celebrated "M.S. Subbulakshmi," her brief entry into acting (most notably in Meera), her initial interviews and much more
The script delves into her meeting and eventual marriage with journalist and freedom fighter Kalki Sadasivam. It honestly addresses complex family elements, shifting interpersonal equations with her mother and brother, and the societal stigma she faced.
It details her transformation into a global cultural ambassador, as well as the quiet financial struggles she endured later in life.
