Presenting Ninasam Tirugata Nataka: KOLA
*Kola* is one of the plays in a trilogy written for the Indian stage Yuganta. When it was staged in 1994, although it drew mixed reactions, no one questioned the scope and power of the play. It subtly weaves together and reflects upon shifting social and economic conditions: the caste system, the migration of villagers to cities, the decline of the old feudal (landlord) system, the pressures of the new commercial era, and the status of women. While Chirebandiwade the first part of the Yuganta trilogy depicts the onset of the decline of the Dharangaon family, Kola delves deeper, unveiling the complexities of family relationships, intergenerational conflict, and emotional turmoil embedded within that collapse. The play captures the tug of war between the grip of tradition, modern sensibilities, and individual desires. On one side stands the older generation, fearful of the changes brought by modernity; on the other is the younger generation who, despite having moved away from their ancestral roots in pursuit of employment and personal aspirations, still harbor an enduring, deep seated connection to their origins.
