About The Event
Sharad Joshi Express is a satirical stage adaptation of seven of Sharad Joshi’s most memorable short stories—Sarkar ka Jadoo, Dibbe Mein Baithe Log, Saari Bahas Se Guzar Kar, Coffee House Mein Baithe Char Vyakti, Chacha ka Truck aur Hindi Sahitya, Mere Kshetra ke Pati and Udhaar ka anant akash. Set against the lively backdrop of an Indian railway platform, the play is presented through the eyes of a whimsical “magician” who invites the audience on a humorous, thought-provoking journey aboard the fictional “Sharad Joshi Express.”
Through sharp wit and clever theatrical devices, the stories blend into one another, touching on themes like political absurdity, bureaucratic red tape, nepotism, idleness, societal pace, and the quirks of everyday Indian life. Each vignette, though rooted in Joshi’s original prose, comes alive on stage with colorful characters—a leader and his bodyguard, a pompous bureaucrat, coffee-house philosophers, a proud nephew, a struggling tourist—and, of course, the ever-observant common man.
Adapted for the stage by Mayank Pahwa, the play retains Joshi’s hallmark humor and biting satire, turning ordinary situations into reflections on a society that is at once exasperating and endearing. The result is a theatrical celebration of Sharad Joshi’s genius—where laughter is the doorway to introspection.
