Sakharam Binder… A probing, controversial, and explosive play from the veteran playwright Vijay Tendulkar. The play takes on the moral custodians of culture of the 70s. As expected, the play faced headwinds with a ban, and the Censors went heavily against it. Playwright Tendulkar and Director Kamalakar Sarang were both targeted. There were attempts to stop the shows.
Maharashtra’s favourite personality, P. L. Deshpande, responded to the controversy in his own style and wrote a play called Bhagwan Sri Sakharam Binder…
Sakharam Binder is a play by Vijay Tendulkar that explores themes of power, control, sexuality, and morality.
While it appears to be a parody of the original play, Sakharam Binder,
Pu La actually ridicules the hypocrisy of a moralistic society. Pu la attacks the marriage system in a satirical way. He asks questions to every other person in society at the same time to fellow drama writers who write in traditional way.
The play remained untouched and unstaged till date. Pu La’s humorous take never reached the audience. Pu La’s solidarity with Tendulkar and the play is all the more relevant today.
