Enter যক্ষপুরী (Yakshapuri), a city built on gold, ruled by fear, and stripped of everything that makes us human. Deep beneath its iron walls, men toil endlessly in the darkness, digging for gold for a king they have never seen. Here, names have disappeared. Human beings have become numbers. Desire has become greed, freedom has become rebellion, and life itself has been reduced to a machine of production.
Behind an impenetrable web of iron mesh sits the king, powerful, wealthy, and utterly alone.
And then, Nandini arrives.
Played by Chaiti Ghoshal, Nandini carries no weapon, no wealth, and no power, only the radiant force of life itself. Adorned with the vivid red oleanders that give the play its name, she brings colour into a world consumed by gold.
She speaks where others remain silent. She questions what others have accepted. She laughs where others have forgotten how to live.
Her beloved Ranjan remains an elusive presence, but Nandini's search for him becomes something far greater: a search for love, freedom, human dignity, and the possibility of breaking free from a world that has forgotten its own soul.
As Nandini moves through the rigid hierarchy of যক্ষপুরী, she awakens something long buried within its people. Miners, scholars, officials, and even the king himself, begin to confront the emptiness of the world they have created.
For the king, Nandini represents the one thing his immense wealth cannot buy and his absolute power cannot possess: freedom.
Written by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore in 1923-24, Raktakarabi remains astonishingly relevant today, a haunting meditation on unchecked power, greed, industrialisation, environmental destruction, and the cost of treating human beings as mere instruments of production.
