About The Event
Produced by the company AWA - As We Are, by choreographer Baptiste Hilbert and dancer and performer Catarina Barbosa, Shoot the Cameraman blends the instinctive, spontaneous nature of live performance with the possibilities of the 7th art.
The basis and particularity of this multi-inspired piece is to offer two different but simultaneous visions of the same events. This is made possible by live video transmission.
On stage, you`ll have the chance to meet our characters, dancers as well as camera men and women, both of whom play an integral part in the story.
On stage, we`ll be looking at human beings and their emotions through the eyes of a young couple who could be described as Mr and Mrs Everyone. We`re going to discover what kind of levers could be at the root of the unforgivable. A succession of events, sometimes cataclysmic, sometimes subtle, will lead our two guinea pigs to change their behaviors and their way of seeing things. The codes that once governed their married lives will gradually unravel, eventually disappearing and giving way to a single vision of things. These radical changes will have no other effect than to push our two lovers to their limits, which could lead to the emergence of the `Beast` that lies dormant in them, as it does in each and every one of us.
The gestures used are intimately linked to the unfolding of the story. The entire piece is based on alternating improvisations and written phrases.
We drew inspiration from period couple dances, propaganda gestures, military parades of all kinds and tribal dance.
As in all our previous work, the movement of the body is our main tool for supporting our message. So, movement is not the central theme of the piece, but rather a way for us to express it.
By bringing together a dancer and a cameraman/-woman on stage, the show offers spectators a double reading of a passionate drama unfolding simultaneously before their eyes and on screen. The audience is thus forced to choose where to fix its attention, as the company takes it to task and plays with perspectives. While what we see with our own eyes seems unfalsifiable, it quickly becomes clear that the framing of a shot can be a matter of pure manipulation.
This is our way of showing the public that the responsibility of the person being filmed is just as important as the responsibility of the person holding the camera.
Shoot the Cameraman questions the omnipresence of images in our lives and ingeniously sharpens the critical eye of its audience. Essential in this age of over-connection, over-information and fake news!
