About The Event

"Eternal story of a human being's quest for true love." – Femina
"A gripping serial replete with suspense and humour." – The Hindu

Staged at multiple National Theatre Festivals, Simantini is a witty, stimulating, daring comedy play based on Somerset Maugham's "The Constant Wife," translated by Utpal Jha. The play is directed by Sayandeb Bhattacharya, who brought us theatrical splendor like Nati Binodini, Sesh Shringo, and Sadichha-r Rangbadal.

The play revolves around Kaninika, a calm and intelligent homemaker, and her husband's extramarital relationship with her friend Rangeela, who lights up many a male heart with her pretty face and coquettish airs. The play begins with a gradual unfolding recognition of this scandalous affair, which Kaninika's sister angrily disapproves of, while her mother seems to accept it for the sake of preserving Kaninika's marriage and saving her from social stigma.

Against this backdrop, the drama takes a different turn with the emergence of Kaninika's former suitor after 15 long years. The theatrical peak is reached with the sudden appearance of Rangeela's workaholic, indulgent, but jealous husband, revealing the infidelity in front of everybody. How will the witty and modern Kaninika react to this revelation of the truth? Will she seek legal recourse? Can the ardent love of her former suitor persuade her to change her life? The climax of the play holds the answers to these intriguing questions.
