About The Event
"The House of Bernarda Alba"— I read this play written by Lorca at the end of the previous century. My transformation process is an attempt, as a theater practitioner, to explore how a rare blend of primitivism and modernity takes shape in the 'lived experiences' of the characters within this play. Although slightly different in genre from the recent productions of "Prachyo", its aim is indifferent. Amidst a chaotic and directionless society, the roadmap of civilization's progress lies in shattering the vested interests of the ones in power, the state, and the gatekeepers of faith and religion—who impose regressive family structures to suppress the absolute freedom of individuals. This roadmap is both relevant to our time as well as modern in essence.
An excerpt from the revered Somnath Maitra’s essay 'Contemporary and Modernity' could serve as an endorsement for the play's acceptance and necessity: "The sky, not the cage, is the refuge of the bird, similarly, the refuge of the human mind is not the cage of social conventions but the sky of freedom. The mind rebels against the stultifying formalities and conventions of society to achieve this liberation, but this rebellion is not merely the madness of destruction. The emotion of creation is the life-force of this rebellion."
The characters in this play seek to break out of this cage and bathe their wings in the sunlight of an open sky—I have strived to create a stage expression for that very desire.
