About the Play
What if Emperor Shah Jahan decided to build his ultimate monument of love, the Taj Mahal, in modern-day India?
Written by renowned playwright Ajay Shukla, "Taj Mahal Ka Tender" is one of the most celebrated and successful Hindi satirical plays of our time. It takes the audience on a hilariously frustrating ride through the labyrinth of the great Indian bureaucracy, replacing royal grandeur with modern red tape.
Synopsis
Emperor Shah Jahan has a grand vision: to build a breathtaking mausoleum in memory of his beloved Mumtaz Mahal. But there is a catch - he is not operating in the 17th century anymore. To get the monument built, he must rely on the modern Public Works Department (PWD).
Instead of swift royal decrees, the mighty Emperor finds himself buried under endless files, feasibility studies, contractor negotiations, and the shrewd, bribe-seeking antics of PWD engineer Guptaji. As the years roll by, the budget inflates, tenders are endlessly floated and cancelled, and the ultimate symbol of love becomes a victim of systemic corruption and institutional lethargy.
Will Shah Jahan ever see his dream materialize, or will he die of old age clutching nothing but a "tender"?
