About The Event
Tawayafnama The Musical is a powerful dance drama adapted from the work of Shri Vimal Kumar, a senior writer and poet, that brings alive the forgotten stories, artistry and cultural legacy of the tawaifs of India. Through Kathak, music, poetry and theatre, the production traces the remarkable journey of these women, from the legendary Gauhar Jaan, one of India`s earliest recording artists, to Asgari Bai, the celebrated vocalist, and Begum Akhtar, whose extraordinary musical legacy transcended the boundaries of the kotha and entered the mainstream. Tawayafnama looks beyond the stereotypes to reveal women who were not merely entertainers, but accomplished artists, poets, musicians, patrons and custodians of India`s composite cultural heritage. Their salons nurtured music, dance, poetry and etiquette, yet history often reduced their identities to the stigma attached to their profession. The production celebrates their art, resilience, individuality and indomitable spirit, while exploring the social circumstances that pushed these remarkable women to the margins. From the gramophone records of Gauhar Jaan to the soulful voice of Begum Akhtar, Tawayafnama is a journey through forgotten histories, reclaiming the women behind the legends and remembering their contribution through the language of dance.
