Nagraj Manjule is an Indian director, screenwriter, and actor who works in the Marathi film industry. Manjule started his career with a short film, Pistulya (2010), which won the National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film of a Director in 2010. Manjule has also published a book of Marathi poetry titled, Unhachya Katavirudhha. The book won the Bhairuratan Damani Sahitya Puraskar award.

Early Life

Manjule spent his childhood in the Jeur Village of the Solapur district of Maharashtra. He got married to Sunita in the year 1997. Manjule was just 19 when he got married and was still studying in standard XII. Later, he pursued M.A in literature from the Pune University and also holds a Masters degree in communication studies from New Arts, Science and Commerce College (Ahmednagar). In 2014, after 15 years of marriage, the couple separated.

Movie Career

As an Actor
In 2009, Nagraj made a short film titled Pistulya, which he says is inspired by the experiences he had growing up. The short film went on to receive a National Award and Manjule was highly praised for his direction. Later, in 2014, Manjule directed his first feature film titled, Fandry. The movie received worldwide recognition and was highly praised by the audience. The movie also received several National and International awards, prominent among them being the Best First Film of a Director at Indira Gandhi Award (Golden Lotus) National Film Festival.

In 2016, Manjule directed his second feature film titled, Sairat, which went on to become the highest grossing Marathi movie of all time. The movie premiered at the 66th Berlin Film Festival and received a standing ovation. The following year, the movie was remade in Kannada as Manasu Malligey (2017), with Rinku Rajguru reprising her role from the original movie and Nishanth starring opposite her.

As an Actor
Apart from direction, Manjule has also featured as an actor in Pistulya, Fandry, and Sairat. He has also appeared in Baji (2015), which marked the comeback of Shreyas Talpade in the Marathi film industry after a hiatus of seven long years. Manjule has also acted in the movie Highway (2015), and The Silence (2016). His 2018 release includes Naal.
