Introduction Vasundhara Devi (1917-1988) was an Indian film actress, trained Bharatanatyam dancer, and a Carnatic singer. Although she worked in Tamil cinema, she has largely been recognized for her vocal abilities.
Early Life Born into an orthodox Mysore Iyengar family in Madras (Chennai) to Yadguri Devi and MN Srinvasan, who worked in the Imperial Bank of India, which was run by the British, Devi was trained in Carnatic music under Manakal Sivaraj Iyer, and Bharathanatyam. Her mother went to great lengths to make sure she was trained in classical music, since she herself was denied the chance due to family pressure. After she became an established Carnatic singer, Devi received offers to do films.
Personal Life Devi married a relative, MD Raman since it was mandatory to marry within caste. Famous Bollywood actress of yesteryears, Vyjayantimala is their daughter. However, their marriage did not last very long, Devi left Raman and the adolescent
Vyjayantimala for another man.
Movie Career Devi`s first film was Rishyashringar (1941), which was named after a sage. Her next film was Mangamma Sabadam (1943), which was a blockbuster hit. In the latter film, her singing and dancing skills were much appreciated.
