About the movie
Maattukkaara Velan features MGR in a classic double role as Velan, a simple cowherd, and Raghu, a sophisticated lawyer. When their lovers (Jayalalitha and Lakshmi) mistake the two men for each other, Velan seizes the opportunity to solve a murder case that has baffled Raghu, while also winning back a wealthy heiress whose father had once rejected him. The film is a textbook example of the MGR political formula - the common man wielding literacy as a weapon against elite oppression. It was later remade in Hindi as Jigri Dost (1969), directed by Ravikant Nagaich and starring Jeetendra.
