There has already been an excellent documentary made on Arunnachalam`s life. What director R Balki has done is to make a Bollywood version of the pioneer`s struggles. The first half, which has lots of interaction between Laxmikant (Akshay Kumar) and his wife Gayatri (Radhika Apte) flows like a breeze. Though he looks twice her size, there is real chemistry between Akshay and Radhika. Their interactions breathes life into the film.

One big advantage for PadMan is that its main theme is a good conversation starter in Indian cinema. Rarely are movies made here that revolve around the subject of `chums` and discuss the taboos surrounding them. Last year, we had a movie called Phullu, starring the talented Sharib Hashmi, which also revolved around the same topic and nearly the same story. While Phullu dealt with the plot in a depressing manner, PadMan takes a more light-hearted tone (but not as humorous as the trailers suggest) that will connect more with the mainstream audiences.

Akshay Kumar plays one Lakshmikant Chauhan, an uneducated, intuitive innovator of sorts (one wished to see more of his `jugaad` inventions), from Maheshwar - a gorgeous riverside settlement, with the 18th Century Queen Ahilyabai Holkar`s minimalist palace overlooking the Narmada, which I think you must visit, if ever around Indore sometime. The location is used well to prettify the frame here, although one hardly gets a sense of its people, and the patois.

How do you make a mainstream film with a message about menstrual hygiene? Simple. If youre Akshay Kumar, you stick to the template of your last hit a film with a message about the hazards of open defecation. Like Toilet Ek Prem Katha, Akshays latest, Pad Man, is about the great lengths a loving husband will go to for the happiness and the health of his wife.

Newly-married Lakshmikant Chauhan (Akshay Kumar) is head over heels in love with his wife Gayatri (Radhika Apte). Their heartfelt chemistry is beautifully explored in the track `Aaj Se Teri` in the beginning. Slowly when Lakshmi discovers about Gayatri`s menstruation, he tries to coax her to stop using dirty rags for her monthly periods and switch to sanitary napkins instead. However, Gayatri expresses her shock over the pads` expense and feels reluctant to use them with the taboo surrounding the natural process.

Akshay Kumar is a man on a mission. Most of his acclaimed work in recent times involves him taking up a cause that`ll enrich society or whip up nationalistic fervour. There`s an obvious enthusiasm in him to play characters taking a morally high ground. And while it is advantageous to spearhead significant subjects, a monotony of earnestness has set in.
