Indian ad filmmaker turned movie and television director, Abhinay Deo is best remembered for his directorial debut Delhi Belly starring Imraan Khan, Vir Das, and Kunaal Roy Kapoor. The 2011 movie garnered immense praise and acclaim, and he went on to win the Filmfare Award for Best Debutant Director. He directed the action Force 2 starring John Abraham, Sonakshi Sinha, and Tahir Raj Bhasin.

Early Life
Born and brought up in Mumbai, Abhinay is the son of yesteryear actor Ramesh Deo and his wife Seema Deo. He has an elder brother, Ajinkya Deo, who is quite popular in Marathi cinema. Abhinay is a qualified architect, however, he step foot in the field of advertising in 1993 when he joined Ogilvy and Mather, where he soon became the Creative Director - Films. After working with Ogilvy and Mather for over seven years, he started the creative team at his father`s production company, Ramesh Deo Production Pvt. Ltd, which works around the production of ad films, feature films, music videos, television serials, documentaries, and short films. Abhinay has directed over 450 TVCs and works closely with reputed multinational agencies and corporate houses. His work as an ad director has won him numerous international and national awards.

Personal Life
Abhinay is married to Smita Deo, who is a home cook and has launched her own cookbook: Karwar to Kolhapur VIA Mumbai. Together, the couple has a son, Yug.

Movie Career
After being a successful ad filmmaker, he made his Bollywood directorial debut in 2011 with crime thriller Game starring Abhishek Bachchan and Kangana Ranaut. His next release was Aamir Khan Productions` bilingual black comedy Delhi Belly, which starred Imraan Khan, Vir Das, and Kunaal Roy Kapoor in pivotal roles. The movie was extremely well-received and went on to win the Filmfare Award for Best Debutant Director for the movie. After his successful debut, Abhinay Deo directed the 2016 sequel to Force, which released in 2011, titled Force 2 and stars John Abraham, Sonakshi Sinha, Tahir Raj Bhasin in lead roles. He also directed the crime-flick Blackmail (2018) starring Irrfan in the lead and Doosra (2021).

Television Career
While he was not filming, Abhinay was busy directing the Indian adaptation of the American political thriller 24. With his direction, Abhinay revolutionized the way television shows should be directed in India, in a way. The political thriller marks the first time that Fox Studios has given rights for any of its shows to be adapted. The directed worked on both the seasons of the show starring Anil Kapoor, which first aired in 2013. The show garnered immense praise with Abhinay winning the Best Director Award at the Telly Awards and the Indian Television Academy Awards both in 2014.

  • Abhinay had declined the offer to work on Delhi Belly since he was signed to work with Excel for a movie, which was not Game. Aamir Khan then approached a Swedish director, however, that didn’t work out. After Abhinay was done with his commitment with Excel, he was again approached by Aamir Khan to work on the film. He had almost missed out on working on the movie.
