Hailing from the family of musicians, Amaal Mallik is an Indian composer and singer who made his Bollywood debut in 2014 with the
Salman Khan starrer
Jai Ho. Son of the music director,
Daboo Mallik and nephew of
Anu Malik, Amaal won the Filmfare Producers Guild Film Award for his composition `Sooraj Dooba Hain` from the film Roy (2014). He has composed several hit songs for movies such as Hate Story 3 (2015), Airlift (2016), Kapoor & Sons (2016), M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016), and Bar Bar Dekho (2016).
Early Life
Amaal was born to Daboo Mallik and Jyothi Mallik in Mumbai, India. He has a younger brother,
Armaan Malik, who is a singer. Amaal attended the Jamnabai Narsee School and later completed his graduation from N.M. College. The musician holds a degree in Bachelor of Commerce. After studying piano, he completed a course in Western Classical, Jazz & Rock Music from the Trinity College of Music. Amaal has also received training in Indian classical music from his grandfather Sir Sardar Mallik.
Movie Career
As a Composer
Having a penchant for music at an early age, in 2005, Amaal, who was 15 then, began assisting the music composer and background scorer
Amar Mohile, who was then working on the soundtrack of
Ram Gopal Varma`s
Sarkar. A couple of years later, he also assisted on the soundtrack for
Apoorva Lakhia`s
Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007).
Following this, Amaal went on to arrange and produce music, assisting his father on the movie
Kisaan, released in 2009. Having been exposed to the nuances of music composing at an early age, he then assisted notable music directors including
Pritam,
Sandeep Chowta, and
Salim-Sulaiman for movies such as
Rowdy Rathore (2012),
Saheb Biwi Gangster Returns (2013),
Phata Poster Nikla Hero (2013) and
Youngistaan (2014).
Amaal`s maiden project as a background score composer was the sports film
Khwaab, which was produced by Bullseye Entertainment and PVR Pictures. Fetching great reviews for his work, the composer soon made his debut as a music composer in Bollywood with the movie Jai Ho in 2014. He composed three songs in the movie Tumko To Aana Hi Tha, Jai Jai Jai Jai Ho, and Love You Till The End. The following year Amaal composed one of the chartbusters of the year, Sooraj Dooba Hai sung by
Arijit Singh for the movie
Roy. The song that received rave reviews for its peppy and groovy rhythm was also a welcome change for Arijit Singh fans as the singer was associated with sad numbers. Within 24 hours of the release of the video of the song, it received 6,50,000 hits on YouTube and soon became the `party anthem of the year`. In the same year, he worked on movies such as
All is Well (2015),
Hero (2015), and
Hate Story 3 (2015).
In 2015, he worked on the song Kar Gayi Chull (
Kapoor & Sons) - a recreated song, originally composed by
Badshah. Some of the other songs he composed that year include Rom Rom Romantic (
Mastizaade), Hua Hai Aaj Pehli Baar (
Sanam Re), and Sab Tera (
Baaghi). While Amaal achieved success by collaborating with various music directors by 2015, he had not worked as a solo composer for a movie. And it was the year 2016, that saw him work on his first movie -
M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story - wherein he worked as a solo composer. Amaal composed seven songs in the movie, while
Rochak Kohli, the guest composer, composed the eighth song. He went on to compose two more songs that year - Sau Aasmaan from the movie
Baar Baar Dekho and Ishaara from
Force 2.
In 2017, he composed two songs for the movie
Badrinath Ku Dulhania viz. Aashiq Surrender Hua and Roke Na Ruke.
As a Singer
Amaal has mostly sung the songs which he himself as composed viz. O Khuda from the movie
Hero (2015), Buddhu Sa Mann from the movie Kapoor & Sons (2016) and Aashiq Surrender Hua from Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017). In 2016, he also sang `Catch Me If You Can`, composed by Gourov Roshin, from the movie Force 2. His 2019 releases include
De De Pyaar De and
Kabir Singh. His 2021 releases include
Saina and
Koi Jaane Na.
Independent Projects
Amaal signed an exclusive contract with the T-Series music company under which he composed six singles. Of those singles, the song Main Rahoon Ya Na Rahoo, which was sung by his brother Armaan Malik went on to become a huge hit.
Television Career
Amaal has worked with the some of the most acclaimed directors of the such as Prahlad Kakkar, Hemanth Bhandari, and Bodhayan Mukherjee to compose the music for brands like Vodafone, Horlicks, Indian Oil, and Amul. He has also composed the title song for the TV show Hongey Judaa Na Hum. Amaal was also nominated for Best Background Score for his work on the TV show 26/12 which was aired on Life Ok.
