Movie Career
As a Director
O connor was raised in New York and started his career as a writer with a short film The Bet (1992). It was in 1994 that O Connor directed and wrote a short film titled American Standoff, starring Kevin Corrigan. The following year O Connor made his feature film debut with the movie Comfortably Numb starring Dana Ashbrook, Angela Shelton, and Harry Lennix. He later ventured into stage and production starring in the Off Broadway play, Rumblings of a Romance in 1997.

In 1997, O Connor planned to make a movie based on his then wife, Angela Sheltons, childhood memories. Shelton had spent most of her childhood on the road with her mother. He especially wanted to cast the Tony Award winning British actress Janet McTeer in the movie, however, none of the producers he approached were willing to finance for the film citing McTeer non popularity in the American film industry. He went on to produce the film himself and McTeer won the Best Actress Award at the Golden Globe Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Award that year.

After the success of Tumbleweeds, OConnor focused on producing movies until 2004 when he directed Walt Disney Pictures Miracle. The movie was inspired by the 1980 Winter Olympics victory of the US hockey team. The film received positive box office reviews and won the Best Sports Movie ESPY Award in 2004. His next directorial saw Edward Norton and Collin Farrell come together for the thriller Pride and Glory, released in 2008. The movie was not well received at the box office and was also accused of racism for its portrayal of Dominican Americans.

In 2011, O`Connor wrote the screenplay, produced, and directed the movie Warrior. The lead actors performance was highly praised by the critics while Nick Nolte also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In 2016, O`Connor directed the western action movie Jane Got A Gun. His other releases include The Accountant (2016) and The Way Back (2020).

  • "I always say to my agents, you go through one of these big kind of movies, everyone makes money, but like, I said, 'I'm the one who's gotta go make it, and if I don't have my heart in it, and it's like a love affair, I'm not going to do a good job. Then, and I don't want to just get paid. I just, I don't want to do that"."
  • ""At least I want to be making films that are somehow born out of me that are stories I want to tell. The challenge is figuring out how to do it where you can make them personal, yet still, deliver to an audience a film experience that is satisfying and emotional, and that's what I'm trying to do.""
