Gavin O Connor is an American director, actor, playwright, and producer who made his directorial debut with the movie Comfortably Numb in 1995. He is married to actress Brook Burns since June 2013.
Movie Career
As a Director
O connor was raised in New York and started his career as a writer with a short film The Bet (1992). It was in 1994 that O Connor directed and wrote a short film titled American Standoff, starring
Kevin Corrigan. The following year O Connor made his feature film debut with the movie Comfortably Numb starring Dana Ashbrook, Angela Shelton, and
Harry Lennix. He later ventured into stage and production starring in the Off Broadway play, Rumblings of a Romance in 1997.
In 1997, O Connor planned to make a movie based on his then wife, Angela Sheltons, childhood memories. Shelton had spent most of her childhood on the road with her mother. He especially wanted to cast the Tony Award winning British actress
Janet McTeer in the movie, however, none of the producers he approached were willing to finance for the film citing McTeer non popularity
in the American film industry. He went on to produce the film himself and McTeer won the Best Actress Award at the Golden Globe Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Award that year.
After the success of Tumbleweeds, OConnor focused on producing movies until 2004 when he directed Walt Disney Pictures Miracle. The movie was inspired by the 1980 Winter Olympics victory of the US hockey team. The film received positive box office reviews and won the Best Sports Movie ESPY Award in 2004. His next directorial saw
Edward Norton and
Collin Farrell come together for the thriller
Pride and Glory, released in 2008. The movie was not well received at the box office and was also accused of racism for its portrayal of Dominican Americans.
In 2011, O`Connor wrote the screenplay, produced, and directed the movie
Warrior. The lead actors performance was highly praised by the critics while Nick Nolte also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In 2016, O`Connor directed the western action movie
Jane Got A Gun. His other releases include
The Accountant (2016) and
The Way Back (2020).
As a Producer
As a producer, OConnor has been a part of several movies and documentaries such as The Slaughter Rule, The Smashing Machine (documentary), and Elvis and Anabelle. He has also produced movies that he has directed such as Comfortably Numb, Tumbleweeds,
Warrior, and
The Accountant.
Other Ventures
OConnor along with his twin brother, Greg, co founded Final Cut Features that helps independent filmmakers with post-production financing and services.
