Kapil Sharma is a well-known Indian stand-up comedian, actor, TV host, and producer. Best remembered for his television show Comedy Nights with Kapil, which first aired in 2013 on Colors, however, the show went off air in 2016.
He was named CNN-IBN’s Indian of the Year in the entertainment category in 2013, and was also first appeared in Forbes India Celebrity list, ranking 93rd in the list. The comedian was also nominated by the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in 2014, for which he was later invited to the Rashtrapati Bhavan by the Indian President Pranab Mukherjee in 2015.
After a successful stand-up career, the comedian made his Bollywood debut in Abbas-Mustan’s romantic-comedy Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon in 2015.
Early LifeBorn on the 2nd of April, 1981 to late K. Sharma, who was the head constable with the Punjab Police, and Janak Sharma. He has two siblings; a sister, Pooja Sharma, and a brother, Ashok Kumar Sharma. He studied at the Shri Ram Ashram Senior Secondary School, and went on to study at the Hindu College, Amritsar, and graduated from Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar. His father died of cancer in 2004. When he was a teenager, he worked at a PCO in order earn pocket money, and, upon reaching college, he taught theater students in order to pay for his college fees.
Personal LifeAlthough Kapil ha constantly been linked to his show’s creative director Preeti Simoes, he has never acknowledged the link-up. The comedian is also said to be in a relationship with fellow comedian Bhavneet Chatrath, who is better known as Ginni Chatrath, her stage name. The two are rumored to be dating since 2011 when they participated in comedy show Hans Baliye. However, Kapil has denied all the rumors regarding his personal life.
Stand-up CareerKapil started his career with comedy show Hasde Hasande Raho on MH One, but only gained recognition after he participated in India’s laughter hunt The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007, which he went on to win. However, when he first sent his audition tape for the show, he was rejected. It was only when he re-applied was he chosen to be a part of the show. After winning the show, Kapil was seen Sony Entertainment Television’s Comedy Circus in 2010. He was a part of six seasons of the eighteen and went on to all the six.
In 2013, Kapil launched his own show Comedy Nights with Kapil on Colors under his production house K9 Productions’ banner. The show went on to become one of the most successful shows on Indian television and garnered high TRPs. Bollywood celebrities, right from Amitabh Bachchan to Shah Rukh Khan, graced the show with their presence in order to promote their movies. However, due to issues with the channel, Kapil decided to take his show off-air and launched a new show with the name The Kapil Sharma Show on Sony TV. Although the show’s concept remains the same, a few characters have been revamped, keeping the same ensemble cast.Kapil and his team have gone on tours across the country as well as prime locations around the world.
Apart from participating in comedy shows, and having his own shows, Kapil has also hosted various TV shows like Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa’s sixth season in 2013 along with Manish Paul, and co-hosted the 60th Filmfare Awards in 2015 alongside Karan Johar. In 2016, Kapil also sang the Indian national anthem at the inauguration ceremony of Pro Kabaddi League’s fourth season.
Acting CareerAfter a successful stint on television, Kapil decided to set foot in the film industry. He was supposed to be launched by YRF with the movie Bank Chor, but for some reason the deal did not materialize. He then made his movie debut with Abbas-Mustan’s romantic-comedy Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon in 2015, which co-starred Elli Avram, Manjari Phadnis, Simran Kaur Mundi and Sai Lokur. The movie opened to positive reviews and went on to become a commercially successful movie.
