Grandson of Kunchacko, the founder of Udaya Pictures, Kunchacko Boban is an Indian film actor and producer who predominantly works in the Malayalam film industry. The actor became an overnight sensation with his very first movie Aniyathipravu, which released in 1997. His other popular movies include Nakshatratharattu, Dhosth, Gulumaal: The Escape, and
Pullipulikalum Aattinkuttiyum.
Early LifeBorn in Alappuzha, Kerala, on the 2nd of November, 1976, Kunchacko Boban is the son of actor and producer Boban Kunchacko and his wife Molly Boban. He has two younger sisters Anu Boban and Minu Boban. His grandfather Kunchacko is the founder of the first film studio in Kerala, Udaya Studios, and Udaya Pictures. Meanwhile, he is also the grandnephew of Navodaya Appachan, founder of the Navodaya Studios.
Personal LifeKunchacko Boban has been married to his wife Priya Ann Samuel since 2005. The two got married at the Little Flower Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in Ernakulam.
Acting CareerKunchacko made his acting debut in 1997 with Fazil`s Malayalam musical-romance Aniyathipravu opposite Shalini, which went on to become a blockbuster, making Kunchacko an overnight sensation. Following the success of his debut movie, he was cast in movies like Nakshathratharattu, Mayilpeelokkavu, and Niram, which was one of 1999`s highest-grossing Malayalam movies. After a string of not-so-successful movies such as Ingane Oru Nilapakshi, Prem Poojari, and Sahayathrikakku Snehapoorvam, Kunchacko took a break from movies. While on a break, the actor got married and returned to acting only in 2008 with a special appearance in a song in Shafi`s LollyPop. However, he made his comeback only with the crime comedy Gulumaal: The Escape directed by V. K. Prakash, which went on to become a commercial hit. Following the success of the movie, he had a string of commercially successful movies such as
Mummy & Me, Sakudumbam Shyamala, Traffic,
3 Kings, and
Sevenes, and
Doctor Love. The actor won the Youth Icon of the Year Award at the Asianet Film Awards in 2011.
After his comeback, Kunchacko completely changed his chocolate boy image and was seen doing various different roles such as comic, negative, and serious. He was also a part of
Valiya Chirakulla Pakshikal directed by Dr. Biju, which was based on the Endosulfan-affected Northern Kerala villages. The movie screened at various film festivals such as Toronto Film Festival, New York Indian Film Festival, and International Film Festival of India, and was also screened at United Nations. The movie went on to win the National Award for Best Film on Environment Conservation/Preservation. He was next seen in the Rajesh Pillai-directed thriller
Traffic, which opened to positive reviews. The actor then revamped Udaya Pictures and made his debut as a producer under the banner, which made its comeback after 30 years, with the 2016 movie
Kochauvva Paulo Ayyappa Coelho, which he also stars in along with
Anusree and
Aju Varghese. His 2019 release includes Virus. His 2021 release includes
Mohan Kumar Fans.
