Gokul started his direction career in 2011 with the action-drama film Rowthiram. The film starring Jiiva, Shriya Saran, and Jayaprakash opened to mixed critical reviews initially. However, a few days after the release, the climax of the film was changed according to the response of the audience and it was changed to a positive ending and it immediately won appreciation from the audiences as well as the critics. Following the success of the film in Tamil, it was dubbed in Telugu as Roudram and in Hindi as Nirbhay The Fighter.
For his second directorial venture, Gokul cast Vijay Sethupathi, Ashwin Kakumanu, and Swati Reddy in the comedy film, Idharkuthane Asaipattai Balakumara, which was inspired by a novel of the same name by Balakumaran. Upon release in October 2013, the film got highly positive reviews from the critics and emerged to be a blockbuster, grossing more than 40 crore INR at the box office. The film was later remade in Kannada as Jackson with Duniya Vijay and Pavana Gowda in the lead roles.
After the much success of Idharkuthane Asaipattai Balakumara, Gokul directed the epic supernatural comedy thriller film, Kaashmora featuring Karthi Sivakumar, Nayantara, and Sri Divya in the lead roles. Touted to be one of the most expensive films made in India, it received mixed critical reviews and did average business at the box office. In 2018, he agained joined hands with Vijay Sethupathi for the action comedy, Junga.
