Mohit Marwah is an Indian actor and director who made his Bollywood acting debut with the movie
Fugly (2014), receiving critical and commercial acclaim for his role. The cousin of actors
Arjun Kapoor,
Sonam Kapoor, and
Harshvardhan Kapoor, Mohit began his career working as an assistant director to
Vikram Bhatt in 2005 and only almost a decade later made his acting debut.The actor has also appeared in several short films including
Karan Johar’s debut short film Strangers in the Night.
Early Life Mohit was born to Sandeep Marwah, the founder of Noida Film City, and
Reena Kapoor, the sister of actors
Anil Kapoor and
Sanjay Kapoor, and producer
Boney Kapoor. He has a younger brother, Akshay Marwah, who is a producer. The Bollywood stars
Sonam Kapoor,
Arjun Kapoor, and
Harshavardhan Kapoor, and producer
Rhea Kapoor are his cousins. He completed his schooling at the Don Bosco School and then graduated from the University of Delhi. Having an inclination towards filmmaking, Mohit later joined the Asian Academy of Film & Television.
Movie Career
As a Director
Mohit began his Bollywood career as an assistant director. Assisting
Vikram Bhatt, he worked on three of his films
Elaan,
Jurm, and
Deewane Huye Pagal - all these movies released in 2005.
As an Actor
He began his acting career with a role in his brother Akshay Marwah’s short film The Audition (2011), directed by Karan Boolani. The movie was screened at the National Film School in Nigeria. Mohit next got the opportunity to star in
Karan Johar’s maiden short film Strangers in the Night directed by
Shakun Batra. However, Mohit later struggled to bag roles as he kept auditioning for the next two years only to face rejection. He finally got his big break with the 2014 movie
Fugly directed by
Kabir Sadanand. The movie opened to rave critic reviews with Mohit receiving praise for his performance. Bollywood critic Taran Adarsh commented on his performance stating: "Mohit Marwah makes a confident debut, interpreting his character with insight and conviction. He has this amazing intensity which gels well with his character", while the acclaimed director
Subhash Ghai said: “Actors get it right from the word go. Right away, Mohit Marwah is a Natural Born Star”.
Mohit next appeared in another short film, Love Shots, produced by Y-Films - the youth division of Yash Raj Films. He later signed national award-winning director
Tigmanshu Dhulia’s movie
Raag Desh - The Birth of a Nation. His 2017 release includes the movie
Badrinath Ki Dulhania directed by
Shashank Khaitan.
