Early Life
Born in Alwar, Rajasthan to a retired CBI officer, Rajendra Singh Tanwar, Sakshi completed her schooling from several Kendriya Vidyalayas and graduated from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University. While in college, she was the president of the dramatic society and was actively involved in the college productions. Post college, her plan to enter the administrative services went for a toss when Sakshi auditioned for the position of a host for Doordarshan's program. She got selected and then there was no looking back for the actress.
Television Career
In 1998, Sakshi made her television debut as a host on Doordarshan's song-based program Albela Sur Mela. She got her big break in 2000 when she was cast as the lead in the daily soap opera Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. The show produced by Balaji Telefilms ran for eight years, making Sakshi a household name amongst the Indian viewers. For playing the central character Parvati, Sakshi received the Indian Telly Award for Best Actress in Lead Role, in 2003, and Indian Television Academy Award, in 2010.
From 2011-14, Sakshi appeared as the lead with Ram Kapoor in Ekta Kapoor's serial Bade Acche Lagte Hai, which was telecasted on Sony Entertainment Television. Both Sakshi Tanwar and Ram Kapoor were felicitated with the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award for the portrayal of their characters. Sakshi also appeared in Anil Kapoor's drama series 24 Season 2, in 2016.
Movie Career
In 2015, Sakshi Tanwar featured in the banned Hindi satirical movie Mohalla Assi. Starring Sunny Deol, Ravi Kishan, and Sakshi Tanwar, the film was stayed by the Delhi court for hurting religious sentiments. Her 2016 release includes the biographical sports drama film Dangal. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the film stars Aamir Khan, Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Sanya Malhotra in important roles.
