KAMBOJI is a Malayalam feature film by Sri Vinod Mankara ,who directed the National award winning Sanskrit film PRIYAMANASAM which was the opening movie of the Indian Panorama of the International Film Festival 2015.
The plot revolves around the real-life incident of the hanging of an artist in his Kathakali costume a first of its kind in the country and that too in Kerala, perhaps one of the most tragic and rarest of incidents. Kamboji is a real-life depiction of that incident. Killikkurissimangalam, a village in Kerala, where everyone from the tea-vendor to the village prostitute breathes art, forms the backdrop of the plot, which unravels through the love affair between Kunjunni, a Kathakali artiste, and Uma Anatharjanam, a Mohiniyattam artiste.
The relationship then blossoms into not just an affair between two persons but a unique blend of two art forms. In a quirky twist, the love affair falls apart and Kunjunni gets convicted for a crime. He is then sentenced to death by hanging. As his last wish, Kunjunni seeks to perform Kathakali once again. His wish was allowed, and he performs Kathakali in jail.
In the course of his last performance, Kunjunni transforms himself into another persona, leaving the authorities with little option but to hang him in the Kathakali costume itself.
Kamboji is more than a moving tale of a woman in myriad forms. It is a vivid portrayal of a man haunted by the fate traversing through diverse predicaments.
KAMBOJI is of course not a mere raga... But is an epitome of eternal and passionate love....
