SYNOPSIS
"Hichki" is a story about a woman who turns her most daunting weakness into her biggest strength. Naina Mathur (Rani Mukerji) is an aspiring teacher who suffers from Tourette Syndrome. After several interviews and numerous rejections, she lands her dream job as a full-time teacher in one of the most elite schools in the city. However, she soon realises that the class she has been assigned comprises of defiant and impish students who can't seem to keep out of trouble. Despite a few initial hiccups, Naina must do whatever she can to ensure that her students realise their true potential, and defy all the odds against them.

Hichki had the potential to be more than just a classroom saga. It does touch upon Nainas personal struggles and her conflicted relationship with her father. But it couldve explored these aspects a lot more. For all its shortcomings, the movie still has plenty of freshness, insights and emotional intelligence. It can make you nostalgic about your school days and remind you of your favourite teacher. This one definitely deserves good grades.

One of the film`s biggest strengths is Mukerji, who has been seen in only three films Aiyyaa, Talaash and Mardaani since the box office success of No One Killed Jessica in 2011. She lifts Hichki every time she is on the scene, bringing empathy and charm to Naina`s character without at any moment soliciting the audience`s pity. Even when the screenplay is passing through its most slender passages, Mukerji elevates it with her presence.

A novel plot idea is buried under an avalanche of narrative cliches in Hichki. In her comeback film, Rani Mukerji gives the role of a Tourette Syndrome-afflicted teacher all she has. Full marks there! However, Hichki, directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, isn`t the kind of class act that does justice to the film`s larger purpose of underscoring the need for inclusion.
It is marred by more hiccups than its wafer-thin storyline can handle. The screenplay suffers from a syndrome that Bollywood fans are familiar with - it is a condition characterized by an obsession with amplified sentimentality and the tendency to offer superficial commentary.

Hichki is a well-intentioned film that will give you ample opportunities to wipe tears, but it doesnt make a strong comment. It oscillates between a strong-willed teacher and some kids pushing against the wall. One can be a hero only at the cost of the other. One of them must get an easier win, and the director chooses Rani Mukerji.

Hichki in Hindi means `hiccup`, but this Rani Mukerji starrer has none. The film backed by Yash Raj Films belongs to a different league altogether. And there are ample reasons for it. Director Sidharth P Malhotra takes the audience straight into a middle-class household where veteran actors Supriya Pilgaonkar, Sachin Pilgaonkar play estranged husband and wife blessed with a son and daughter.

Rani Mukerji is literally the queen of the film and steals every frame with her presence. With her performance she makes us believe how much we were missing her. She has made the Tourettes look so simple, which totally is not. She is effortlessly beautiful. Watch it for her and the sweet little message makers are trying to give with this one.

You believe in the brilliance of Rani`s sparkling intelligence and physical stamina through the arduous journey of straightening an unruly lot and braving a barb-ready rival sniggering at her methods - Neeraj Kabi`s starchy, suit-clad, teacher is Narayan Shankar to Rani`s nonconforming Raj Aryan. But the vexing obviousness and self-pitying texture of the narrative cannot be justified by playing earnest.And that`s one syndrome Hichki never gains advantage over till the end.

Here comes a `feel-good` film with a remarkable performance by Rani Mukerji. She gives you enough reasons to embrace this `hichki` with a smile. There`s a dialogue in the film which goes like, `School ke bahar zindagi jab imtihaan leti hai tab subject wise nahi leti`. Hichki, as a whole passes this exam with flying colors!

There is nothing original, nothing surprising, nothing even remotely unpredictable in Hichki. This Rani Mukerji starrer about a teacher who employs unconventional methods to get through to her class of tough, rebellious kids is formula filmmaking to a T. Even the fact that the teacher in question has Tourettes a neurological disorder that causes her to break into loud, involuntary noises works as a trigger to push the clich that who better to recognize the potential in a bunch of misfits than someone whos been misfit all her life.

The movie is more of a cool slice-of-life genre, than making it look a serious film like TaareZameen Par and the likes, where you are manipulated to cry. Director Siddhart Malhotra makes it look very natural. He doesnt try to be extra motivational (of course Rani was all over the media and internet trying to do that to promote the film). Nonetheless, being subtle, the character seemed inspiring. The graph however falls in the second half though and a tad predictable at some points. Also, Ranis character though is a protagonist, shes highlighted a bit more, eventually making for a more screen space to make you saturated.
