One of the most popular Bengali film actors, Abhishek Chatterjee is a veteran who is known to portray all kinds of roles of with utmost finesse and panache. In a career spanning over 30 years, the actor has worked in films across all genres and graced the screen in more than 40 films. The actor who started his career in 1986 with Pathbhola, a Bengali drama film has since then appeared in several popular films like Abbajan (1994), Rangin Basanta (1995), Bariwali (2000), Etai Swarga (2001), Cooli (2004), Gharjamai (2008), Bhoy (2011), and Atmogopon (2013).

Early Life
Abhishek Chatterjee went to Barangore Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama High School and after completing his schooling he pursued his graduation from the Seth Anandram Jaipuria College of the University of Calcutta.

Movie Career
Abhishek started his acting career in 1986 with Pathbhola, a Bengali film directed by Tarun Majumdar and co-starring Haradhan Bannerjee, and Prosenjit Chatterjee. In his solitary release in 1990, director Tony Juneja cast him alongside the superstar of Bengali cinema, Utpal Dutt and Biswajeeet for his action-drama film, Kayedi.

With no releases to his name in 1991, the actor had quite a busy year in 1992 as he appeared in five films. In his first film of the year, the actor starred alongside the Bollywood actress, Rakhee Gulzar, Prosenjit Chatterjee and Biplab Chatterjee in the Prashant Nanda directed Bengali drama film, Maa. The film did well at the box office and following the success of the film, the actor starred in Baadshah, Indrajit Daan Pratidaam, Daan Pratidaan and Purushottam, which was directed by his close friend and actor Prosenjit Chatterjee. Following a successful year in 1992, the actor had his next major success in 1995 as he appeared in the Haranath Chakraborty directed action Bengali film, Sangharsha alongside Ranjit Mallick, Tapas Paul and Prosenjit Chatterjee. The actor`s other releases in 1995 included, Rangin Basanta and Mejo Bou.

After having not much success in 1996, the actor made a great comeback with Dahan, a Bengali feature film that released in 1997. The film, which was based on the Suchitra Bhattacharya`s story of the same name was directed by the late actor, director and lyricist Rituparno Ghosh. The film also featuring Indrani Halder, Rituparna Sengupta and Suchitra Mitra not only won critical acclaim but also won several laurels including two National Film Awards for Best Screenplay.

By the advent of the new millennium, Abhishek Chatterjee had already established himself as an accomplished actors and he started out of the year 2000 on a good note as he had three releases that year. His films were Madhur Milan, Jai Maa Durga and Bariwali. Whilst the first two films received average reviews and fared decently at the box office, the latter film directed by Rituparno Ghosh received tremendous positive reviews from the critics. The film co-starring the Kirron Kher, Roopa Gangauly, Chiranjeet, and Sudipta Chakraborty won two National Film Awards and the director walked away with the Netpac Award. Post the success of Bariwali, the actor continued to give good performances; he had two releases to his name in 2002, viz. Nishana and Bangali Babu and both did fairly well at the box office.

In his solitary release of the year 2003, the actor starred in Alo, where he was credited as Abhishek Chattpadhyay. The film directed by Tarun Majumder and co-starring Rituparna Sengupta and Soumili Biswas was shown in cinemas for eight months and it went onto break several box office records, it also won a nomination at the National Film Awards for Best Film Providing Popular and Wholesome Entertainment.

From 2004 to 2006, the actor had six releases to his name, viz. Coolie (2004), Agnee (2004), Swapno (2005), Sakal Sandhya (2006), Rajmohol (2005) and Tapasya (2006). Most of the films were hits. After 2006, the actor took a break for one year only to make his comeback with Janmadata in 2008. The film was directed by Swapan Saha and it also featured Kaushik Banerjee, Rachana Banerjee and Shankar Chakraborty. The actor`s other two films of the year included Tolly Lights directed by Arjun Chakraborty and Ghar Jamai directed by Anup Sengupta. Barring Chaowa Pawa, which released in 2009, the actor had took a break from acting until 2013 when he returned to do five films in one year. In his first film of his comeback year, the actor played the role of a Don in the Snehasish Chakraborty directed film Promotion. In the same year, the also played the role of C.I.D inspector in Honeymoon a romantic-drama Bengali film directed by Alok Roy.
