Gemma Arterton is an actress of British descent, best known for her work in films such as Quantum of Solace (2008), Clash of the Titans (2010), Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010) and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013). For her debut movie, Quantum of Solace, Arterton received the Empire Award for Best Newcomer.

Early Life
Arterton was born in Kent to Sally-Anne and Barry Arterton. She completed her schooling from Gravesend Grammar School for Girls in Kent. The actress made her first stage appearance in Alan Ayckbourn`s The Boy Who Fell into a Book and also won the best actress prize for her role in the play in a local festival.

Arterton left school at the age of 16 to attend the Miskin Theatre at North West Kent College in Dartford. She was later awarded a government funded scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

Personal Life
In 2007, Arterton was in a 18th month relationship with a British animator John Nolan. The duo met on the set of Quantum of Solace. In 2008, she was in a relationship with Spanish stuntman Eduardo Munoz. They met on the set of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, where he taught her to ride horses. They were in a live-in for 6 months, after which they had split.

On 5 June 2010, Arterton married Italian businessman Stefano Catelli, an employee of a British fashion marketing company. After two years of courtship the couple started living separately and decided to file for divorce with mutual consent. Since, 2014 she in a relationship with Franklin Ohanessian, who she met him on the set of The Voices in 2013 and they also worked together in the film Gemma Bovery.

Movie Career
Arterton started her professional acting career in Shakespeares Loves Labours Lost at The Globe Theatre located in London. She then made a transition from stage to films with her first film St Trinians (2007), in which she played the role of Kelly Jones. Her role in the movie was well appreciated by both audiences and critics alike.

In 2008, the actor was offered the role of a bond girl in a James Bond film, The Quantum of Solace, wherein she played the role of Strawberry Fields, a MI6 agent. The film received critical acclaim and generated revenue worth $586.1 million. Arterton was chosen from around 1500 candidates to play a role in the film. This was a major breakthrough in her career and she continued to work non-stop, with starring roles in major motion pictures such as Richard Curtis`s The Boat That Rocked (2009) in which she essayed the role of Desiree. The film received mixed reviews and could not generate good numbers at the box office. In 2010, she appeared in Mike Newell`s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time co- starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley, Alfred Molina and Richard Coyle. The actors received critical acclaim for their performances and generated revenue worth $336.4 million. The same year, she appeared in Stephen Frears Tamara Drewe in which she potrayed the role of a journalist. The film received critical acclaim and generated revenue worth US$11,910,695. Arterton was also nominated by British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

In 2013, Gemma bagged Tommy Wirkola`s Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters. The actress potrays the role of Gretel in the film. The film received critical acclaim and generated revenue worth $226.3 million.The following year the actress appeared in Anne Fontaine`s Gemma Bovery co-starring Jason Flemyng Mel Raido and Fabrice Luchini. The film had an average run at the box office.

In 2016, Gemma starred in the horror thriller film called The Girl with All the Gifts which is based on M.R. Carey`s book. The film received mixed reviews and had an average run at the box office. The same year, the actress starred in the thriller 100 Streets .This film tells the story of several residents in inner London. It received mixed reviews and did not fare well at the box office. The following year, the actress will be seen in period dramedy Their Finest which is stated to release in 2017.

Television Career
Gemma played a pivotal role in a television series Tess of the D`Urbervilles, which is an adaption of Thomas Hardy`s book. This role helped her to grow as an actor as she was doing a serious role in addition to comedy.
