Kamaleshwar Mukherjee is an Indian ad maker, film director, and actor who primarily works in the Bengali film industry. In 2013, he wrote and directed the movie
Meghe Dhaka Tara which is inspired by the life and work of the acclaimed Indian film director
Ritwik Ghatak.
Early Life
Kamaleshwar holds a medical degree and is an alumnus of the Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. A physician by training, Kamaleshwar initially worked in the advertising field and later ventured into filmmaking.
Movie Career
As a Director
Kamaleshwar made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed movie
Uro Chithi in 2011. A couple of years later, he went on to make
Meghe Dhaka Tara that is based on the life of the filmmaker
Ritwik Ghatak and showcases his time when he was admitted to a mental asylum. The film received rave reviews from the critics and went on to win several awards including the Silver Crow Pheasant Award for the Best Director at International Film Festival of Kerala, 2013. In the same year, he also directed the movie
Chander Pahar, an adventure drama film based on the novel of the same name written by
Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. The movie upon its release was appreciated by the audience and critics alike and has received a cult status in following years; making it one of the most successful movies of Bengali cinema. Kamaleshwar was nominated for the Best Director Award at the Filmfare Awards and won the Zee Bangla Gourab Sonman Best Director Award and the Kalakar Best Director Award. As a Writer
Kamaleshwar made his Bengali film debut as a writer, with the movie Natobor Notout (2010). He later went on to write several movies that he directed including
Uro Chithi (2011),
Meghe Dhaka Tara (2013), and
Khawto (2016).
As an Actor
Kamaleshwar made a cameo appearance in the movie
Mishawr Rahasya in 2013 and since then has appeared in several movies such as
Khaad (2014), Force (2014), and
Arshinagar (2015). His 2019 project includes Durgeshgorer Guptodhon. His 2020 release includes Dwitiyo Purush.
