Nivin Pauly is an Indian actor and producer who predominantly appears in Malayalam cinema. After making his acting debut with the movie
Malarvaadi Arts Club (2009), the actor went on to appeared in several lead and cameo roles. He is best known for his performance in the movie
Thattathin Marayathu (2012).
Early Life Nivin was born into a Syro-Malabar Catholic family that hailed from Aluva, Kerela. Pauly Bonaventure, Navin`s father was a mechanic who worked in Switzerland, and his mother was a nurse at a Swiss hospital. HIs parents stayed in Switzerland for 25 years, and as a child, Nivin would visit them during his holidays. The actor completed his graduation from the Federal Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT), Kerela, in 2006 and holds a B.Tech degree in Electronics and Telecommunication. After completing his graduation Nivin joined Infosys and worked there for a couple of years, from 2006 to 2008, only to resign after his father`s demise.
Personal Life Nivin married Rinna Joy, who was his classmate at FISAT, on 28th August 2010 at the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in Aluva, Kerela. The couple`s first child, a son, Daveed, was born in 2012.
Movie Career Nivin initially suffered a setback while embarking on his journey to become an actor. He applied for an audition
Vineeth Shreenivasan`s directorial debut
Malarvaadi Arts Club, only to be dropped out. However, Nivin got a second chance at the audition and he turned it around for himself, by bagging the lead role in the movie. Upon its release, the movie opened to positive reviews. The actor later went on to star in movies such as
The Metro (2011) and
Sevenes (2011), while he also appeared in small roles in movies such as
Traffic (2011) and
Spanish Masala (2012). However, the talented actor got mainstream recognition with his breakthrough performance in the 2012 movie
Thattathin Marayuthu, a romantic drama directed by
Vineeth Sreenivasan. The movie become the biggest hit of that year, with Nivin being hailed as `the current youth sensation` and `hot property`.
Owing to the success of Thattathin Marayuthu, Nivin went on to make his Tamil film debut with the movie
Neram (2013). Alike his success in the Malayalam film industry, Nivin struck gold with his first Tamil movie; winning the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut for his performance. He then went on to act in movies box office hits such as
1983 (2014),
Ohm Shaanthi Oshaana (2014), and
Bangalore Days (2014).
In 2015, Nivin Pauly starred in the Malayalam musical-comedy drama movie
Premam, directed by
Alphonse Puthren, which went on to become one of the most successful movies of Malayalam cinema. The film that also stars
Madonna Sebastian,
Anupama Parameswaran, and
Sai Pallavi achieved the feat of becoming the first Malayalam movie to run for over 200 days in Tamil Nadu. The success of
Premam meant Nivin would go on to win the Best Actor Award at the South Indian International Movie Awards and the Filmfare Awards. The media soon described him as the next `
Mohanlal` of Malayalam cinema and was also given the tag of `superstar`.
In 2016, he appeared in Action Hero Biju, which he produced as well; Aviyal, a Tamil anthology film, and Jacobinte Swargarajyam. His 2017 release includes the Malayalam drama film Sakhavu. Directed by Sidhartha Siva, the movie co-stars Sreenivasan, Aparna Gopinath in important roles. His 2019 release includes
Moothon, Love Action Drama and Mikhael. His other notable projects include
Thuramukham (2021) and Kanakam Kamini Kalaham (2021).
