Samuel Henry John, better known as Sam Worthington, is an Australian actor, known for his portrayal of the character Jake Sully in the high-grossing film Avatar. His notable works are Terminator Salvation as Marcus Wright, Clash of the Titans and its sequel: Wrath of the Titans as Perseus, and as Alex Mason in the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops and its sequel Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Worthington received Australia`s highest film award for his lead role in Somersault in the year 2004. Worthington`s other successful movies include the war drama Hacksaw Ridge (2016), psychological drama The Shack (2017) and the British-American movie The Hunter`s Prayer (2017).

Early life
Worthington was born to English parents in South East England. When he was six months old, he moved to Perth, where he grew up in Warnbro. His mother Jeanne J. is a housewife while his father Ronald W. Worthington was a power plant employee, and he also has a sister Lucinda. He attended John Curtin College of a Arts in West Australia, where he studied drama but did not graduate. After this, he started working in construction and odd jobs, and then eventually settled in Sydney. At age 19, he auditioned for the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and was accepted with a scholarship.

Personal life
Worthington was in a relationship with actress Maeve Dermody for three years but then broke up in 2008. After this, the actor started dating Natalie Mark from 2008 till 2011. Post this were rumors of a relationship with model Lara Bingle, which he confirmed in 2013. They married in 2014 and have a son, Rocket Zot.

movie career
Worthington made his movie debut with Dein Perry`s drama-romance Bootmen portraying the role of Mitchell Okden. In his first movie itself, he was nominated for the AFI Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (2000). His next was the short film A Matter of Life in 2001 followed by Hart`s War, and Dirty Deeds in 2002. For Dirty Deeds, he won the FCCA Award Best Supporting Actor - Male (2002). In the consecutive year, he was seen in Gettin` Square as Barry "Wattsy" Wirth, a man recently paroled after serving time for a crime he did not commit. However, his breakthrough came with his award-winning performance in the 2004 independent film Somersault, where he essayed the role of Joe, a confused young man having trouble with his sexuality. This role won him three awards - AFI Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role (2004), FCCA Award for Best Actor - Male (2004), and IF Award for Best Actor (2004). This followed with movies like Thunderstruck in the same year, and The Great Raid, and Fink! in the consecutive year.

In the 2006 history drama Macbeth, he portrayed the lead character - Lord Macbeth. After Macbeth, the actor was seen in the creature-feature film Rogue as Neil Kelly, and in Terminator Salvation as Marcus Wright, a cyborg who assisted the humans even though they were suspicious of him. His intense performance in the movie won him the Teen Choice Awards for Choice Movie Fresh Face Male (2009). Later, towards the end of 2009, Worthington featured as Jake Sully in one of the biggest blockbusters of all time - Avatar. Jake Sully was a paraplegic US Marine who was assigned to control an alien body called an avatar through a neural link, but finds himself at the center of a war. His breathtaking performance as Sully, a guy who doesn`t like to be bullied, made him one of the most loved characters among audiences and won him the Saturn Award for Best Actor, Australian Film Institute International Award for Best Actor, Empire Award for Best Actor, and Teen Choice Awards for Choice Movie Actor: Sci-Fi. He also got nominated for Kid`s Choice Awards for Cutest Couple (shared with Zoe Saldana), MTV Movie Awards for Best Fight (shared with Stephen Lang) and Best Kiss (shared with Zoe Saldana), and Teen Choice Awards for Choice Movie: Fight (shared with Stephen Lang). After winning awards for two consecutive movies, the actor gave another brilliant performance in Clash of the Titans that got him nominated for Teen Choice Awards for Choice Movie Actor: Fantasy. After this, in the same year, he appeared in Last Night, and Love & Distrust.

John Madden`s thriller-drama The Debt was his next, co-starring Helen Mirren, Jessica Chastain, Ciaran Hinds, Tom Wilkinson, Marton Csokas, and Jesper Christensen. He then played Detective Mike Souder in Ami Canaan Mann`s Texas Killing Fields. In 2012, he worked in two movies including Man on a Ledge, and Wrath of the Titans alongside Liam Neeson, a sequel to Clash of the Titans. In the sequel too he featured as the demigod and son of Zeus, Perseus. He was then seen in Drift in 2013, a sport drama, where he was praised for his role as an infamous surf filmmaker. Subsequent to this in the next year, he had three releases - Sabotage, Cake, and The Keeping Room. He was again seen in three movies in 2015 including Paper Planes, Kidnapping Freddy Heineken, and Everest, which were successful films too. In 2016, he played the supporting role of Captain Jack Glover in the war drama film Hacksaw Ridge, which revolves around World War II. The movie opened to positive critical reviews and was a huge box office success. Not only this, it received six Oscar nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, and was selected by the American Film Institute as one of its Top Ten Movies of the Year. His 2017 release includes the psychological drama film The Shack, under the direction of Stuart Hazeldine, which turned out to be a box office hit. It starred Worthington as one of the leads opposite Octavia Spencer and Avraham Aviv Alush.
