About
Biplab Chatterjee is a Bengali film actor and director who is known known for his films like Parineeta (2005), Dekha (2001) and Dujane (1984). With a career spanning over four decades, Chatterjee has acted in close to 300 films movies and with most distinguished directors like Satyajit Ray, Pradeep Sarkar, Mrinal Sen, Sandip Roy, Raj Chakrobatty, and Tarun Majumdar. Apart from acting, Biplab has also directed five Bengali films. Apart from cinema, Chatterjee is also actively involved in the politics of West Bengal. He contested for the Assembly elections from Rashbehari constituency in 1998, and from Alipore constituency in 2006. His interest lies in the social uplifting of West Bengal.

Early Life
Biplab Chatterjee was born in Kolkata and completed his higher secondary education from Park institution in 1963 and later completed his graduation from University of Calcutta in 1965. The director and actor, Biplab was interested in the concept of art and drama from a very young age and learned professional acting methods under the tutelage of the renowned stage personality of Kolkata, Sambhu Mitra.

Movie Career
As an Actor
Chatterjee began his acting career with Satyajit Ray`s directorial venture Pratidwandi in 1970. The movie based on the novel by Sunil Gangopadhayay is the first part of the Calcutta Trilogy. It won three national awards and Chatterjee`s performance was termed as "providing able support" by the critics. In 1978, Chatterjee appeared in a supporting role in Ray`s Jai Baba Felunath, which opened to critical acclaim. The movie also starred Soumitra Chatterjee, Santosh Dutta, Siddharth Chatterjee and Uppal Dutt. The film was a visual representation of a famous mystery novel Feluda written by Satyajit Ray. In 1979, he essayed the role of a policemen in Mrinal Sen`s national award winning drama film, Ek din Pratidin. Chatterjee yet again worked with Satyajit Ray in 1983, playing the role of a goon (Shyamlal) in mystery-drama film Phatik Chand--a movie based on one of the many story written by Ray himself.

In 2001, he was seen in the role of a property dealer in Goutam Ghose`s national award winning drama film, Dekha. The movie revolves around a nearly blind poet, alone and reckless, deserted by his wife. The film was awarded Best Feature film in Bengali at 48th National Film Awards. And then in 2005, he acted in Vidya Balan starrer Parineeta, a film adaptation of bengali novella Parineeta by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhayay essaying the role of Shyam Lal Tantiya. In 2010, Chatterjee had a supporting role in an action thriller, Wanted starring Jeet and Srabanti Chatterjee. The movie was one of the biggest hit of the year. Continuing the lieu of working in action movies, in 2011, he essayed the role of a DSP in Bengali hit action film, Shotru. The movie is remake of Tamil language film, Singham. In 2013, Chatterjee was seen in Angnidev Chatterjee`s drama film, Mrs. Sen starring Rituparna Sengupta and Rohit Roy. He was seen portraying the role Rohit Roy`s father in the movie.

In what can be said as one of his prominent roles, in 2015, Chatterjee was seen in a supporting role in Subhabrata Chatterjee`s horror flick, Manihara. Prasing Chatterjee`s acting chops film critic, Upam Buzarbaruah, said "the performance that takes the cake is that of Biplab Chatterjee, who plays Argha`s landlord. He not only adds a hint of comedy to the narrative but actually goes about it with a natural flair." His 2020 release includes Rajar Kirty.

As a Director
His directorial debut, Abhimanyu (1990) is a romantic drama film starring Soumitra Chatterjee and Satabdi Roy. The movie revolves around the love story of Prijay (Soumitra) and Jaya (Satabdi) and their overcoming of hardships. In 1993, Chatterjee directed Parajapati starring himself and Satabdi Roy.

The following year, Biplab Chatterjee once again collaborated with Satabdi Roy for his next directorial venture, Bidrohinini. In 1998, he directed Tomar Aamar Prem, a Romance-drama starring Rituparna Sengupta, Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, Amin Khan, and Dildar. His latest directorial venture was Chor O Bhagoban (2003) starring Chor O Bhagoban, Chiranjit and Stabdi Roy.
