Subrata Sen is an acclaimed Bengali filmmaker who also worked as a journalist for more than a decade before venturing into filmmaking. He is popularly known for his debut film
Ek Je Acche Kanya (2000).
Early Life
Subrata was born in Kolkata on 29th May, 1963. He completed his schooling from South Point High School and graduated in Physics from Presidency College. He worked for a brief period in a bank and then started working as a journalist. He has written for the Anandbazar Patrika, The Statesman and banglalive.com.
Personal Life
He is married to Parongama Sen who is a Physicist of international repute.
Movie Career
As a Director
Subrata got into filmmaking without any formal training in the medium. He made heads turn with his very first film
Ek Je Acche Kanya (2000). Written and directed by him the film was about how a tenant and his fiancée deal with the obsession a mentally unstable grand-daughter of the apartment owner with the new tenant. The film was also
Konkona Sen’s acting debut. She played the role of the girl named Ria.
Sabyasachi Chakraborty was cast in the film as the tenant Anjan. The film is said to be inspired from Hollywood film Crush (1993). However, it won a lot of critical acclaim and was even screened at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. Subrata also won the Gollapudi Srinivas National Award for Best Debut Director that year.
His second film Swapner Feriwala (2002) was also written by him. It starred
Subrata Dutta,
Ferdous Ahmed and Nilanjan Sharma in the lead role. The film is about two magicians who help a young woman protect her family from the clutches of a fake godman. Though the film did not do well at the box office, it did manage to get screened at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
Nil Nirjane (2003), Subrata’s third film, was the first digitally shot film in India. It was about people of varied class and types who come to spend a holiday at a resort and get connected with each other. It starred

Raima Sen, Ayan Mitra,
June Malia, Mou Sultana and
Rajatava Dutta in the lead roles. It again did not impress the critics, but has gained a cult following since its release. The film also won the Best Experimental Film award at the Down Under Film Festival in Australia.
Subrata’s Hotath Neerar Jonnyo (2004) is based on a story by novelist Sunil Gangopadhyay. The film is about a musician who asks his old friend to spend a day with him so that he will be able to forget her. Starring

Jaya Seal and Tina Majumdar in the lead role, the film went into trouble with the Censor Board for some explicit scenes. His next film Bibar (2006) was again based on a controversial Bengali novel. Starring Rita Bhamani and
Biswajit Chakraborty in the lead role, the film was about a young man trying to come to terms with his erotic and thanatotic drives. The film won the two aforementioned actors the Best Actor and Actress awards at the Osian’s Cinefan film festival.
His next film released in the theatres after a gap of six years.
Koyekti Meyer Golpo (2012) is about young females enjoying their sexuality. Subrata’s film is a strange take on the lives of high-class female escorts in Kolkata.

Raima Sen among others act in the film. The film again did not impress local critics, but was screened in the competition section of Madrid International Film Festival and even won an award in the Best Costume Design category.
