Aditya Roy Kapur, a popular Bollywood actor began his journey in the entertainment business by working as a VJ (Video Jockey) on Channel V. He made his debut in the film industry with a small role in
London Dreams (2009) and followed up with supporting roles in
Guzaarish and
Action Replayy in 2010.
Although he comes from an influential family in the film industry, the actor had to work his way up all by himself. Aditya became an overnight sensation as he played the lead role in blockbuster romantic film Aashiqui 2, which was the sequel to the 1990 romantic cult film of the same name. The actor not only wooed the audience with his brilliant performance but also swooned a billion hearts with his charming personality.
Early Life
This handsome actor was born in Mumbai to Punjabi father, Roy Kapur and Salmoe Roy Kapur who has Jewish lineage. Aditya is the youngest of the three siblings, his elder brother
Siddharth Roy Kapur is a noted Bollywood film producer and the CEO of UTV Motion Pictures. His other elder brother,
Kunaal Roy Kapur is also a Bollywood actor.
The actor along with is siblings completed his schooling from G.D. Somani Memorial School in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai and later went to St. Xavier`s College where the pursued his graduation. While in school, the actor aspired to become a cricketer but he quit cricket coaching classes after sixth grade. The actor has went on records to say that he never had the desire to become an actor and he was happy working as a VJ. His acting career took off when he was called to an audition for London Dreams. Before he made his maiden appearance in a feature film, Aditya took dancing lessons as well as went to diction class to improve his Hindi accent.
Movie Career
Aditya Roy Kapur made his feature film debut with
London Dreams (2009) where he had a minor role as a Pakistani musician. The film, which had an ensemble cast including
Salman Khan,
Ajay Devgn,
Asin and
Rannvijay Singha got mixed to negative reviews. Whilst the actor did not garner any attention for his role his debut film, he got noticed for his roles in
Action Replayy and
Guzaarish where he played supporting roles.
The actor got his major breakthrough in 2013 as he starred in a lead role in
Aashiqui 2, the sequel to the 1990 romantic cult of the same name. Aditya reprised the role of
Rahul Roy from the original film. The film co-starring
Shraddha Kapoor was directed by
Mohit Suri. The film, which is best remembered for its romantic soundtracks, `Tum hi Ho` and `Sunn Raha Hai Na Tu` was critically acclaimed and emerged to be one of the highest grossing films of the year. Followings its huge success, the film was remade in Telugu as
Nee Jathaga Nenudali (2014) with Sachin J. Joshi and Nazia Hussain playing the lead roles. In the same year the actor delivered yet another stellar performance in the romantic drama
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, which was written and directed by
Ayan Mukerji. For his brilliant performance in the film, Aditya won his maiden IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Following the huge success of Aashiqui 2 and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, the actor next appeared in the romantic comedy
Daawat-e-Ishq, which was directed by
Habib Faisal and produced by
Aditya Chopra. The film co-starring
Parineeti Chopra and
Anupam Kher received mostly positive reviews and grossed 12. 7 crore INR in its opening weekend. With no releases to his name in 2015, the actor starred off his campaign in 2016 by played the lead role in the romantic drama film,
Fitoor alongside
Katrina Kaif and
Tabu. The film directed by
Abhishek Kapoor was the first flop of his career. However, he rounded off the year on a high as he appeared in a cameo in the super hit coming-of-age dram film
Dear Zindagi starring
Alia Bhatt and
Shah Rukh Khan. His 2017 project includes
OK Jaanu, which is the official remake of the 2015 Tamil film
O Kadhal Kanmani. His 2020 release includes
Malang and Sadak 2, which released on Disney+ Hotstar.
