Ira Dubey is an Indian actor who is an active part of theater while she’s also seen in Bollywood movies in supporting roles. Apart from theater and movies, she also features in commercials and is best remembered for featuring alongside Abhay Deol in the ads for fashion shopping site MYNTRA.

Early Life
Daughter of popular theater actor Lillete Dubey and her husband Ravi Dubey, former senior vice-president of corporate communications in the Tata Group, Ira was born on the 1st of August, 1984 in New Delhi, India. Her father also used to be a theater actor before he joined the corporate world. He passed away in 2015 due to pancreatic cancer. She has a sister, Neha Dubey, who is a professional psychotherapist and, like her mother and sister, is a theater and movie actor too. Ira completed her schooling from The Cathedral & John Connon School, following which she graduated from St. Xavier’s College. She then went on to study filmmaking at the Yale University in Connecticut, USA where she trained in speech and movement development, and Shakespeare, Meisner and the Michael Chekhov acting techniques along with other acting theories.

Theater Career
Since her mother Lillete Dubey was always involved in theater, Ira grew up being a part of theater even as a child, and was there during her mother’s rehearsals. Upon growing up, she moved to the USA to pursue her passion for acting, following which she was an active part of theater in the West. Some of her works from when she lived and studied there are A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Othello, The House of Bernarda Alba, and Beckett’s Shorts to name a few. Although she could’ve stayed back in the USA after completing her course, she returned to India to be a part of theater back at home. She was seen in plays like Womanly Voices, 30 Days in September, Wedding Album, and Mohan Rakesh's Adhe Adhure. Working under the direction of her mother, Ira was seen in The Primetime Theater Company, founded by Lillete Dubey, play August: Osage County.

Ira began touring in the September in 2014 performing Heath Raffo’s one-woman show 9 Parts of Desire, which was directed by Lillete Dubey and went on to garner immense praise from the audience and critics alike. She then went on to star in Tennessee Williams’ Glass Menagerie directed by Rajit Kapur, and portrayed the role of Portia in William Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice produced by Vickram Kapadia. As of 2016, Ira was seen playing the role of Nora in Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House produced by Pushan Kripalani.

Movie Career
The already established theater actor then made her Bollywood movie debut in the 2007 romantic musical comedy Marigold, starring Salman Khan and and Ali Larter, in a minor role. After her screen debut, she was seen in the 2009 satirical mockumentary The President is Coming alongside Konkona Sen Sharma and Shernaz Patel, and directed by Kunaal Roy Kapur, marking his directorial debut. Her most recognizable movie role remains to be that of Pinky Bose in the 2010 comedy drama Aisha. Starred alongside Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol, Ira’s character was that of Sonam Kapoor’s stylish best friend.

She was then seen making a special appearance in the Prakash Jha 2011 movie Turning 30!!!, starring Gul Panag, Siddharth Makkar, and Purab Kohli. Next, she was seen in M Cream, a movie based on a road trip taken by four friends in search of a mythic form of hash, in 2014. The movie was screened first at the Rhodes Island International Film Festival and went on to win the Grand Prize for Best Feature Film. The movie was then screened at multiple other film festivals where it was well-received and also won several awards. However, the movie starring Imaad Shah, Auritra Ghosh, and Raaghav Chanana only released in 2016 in India.

In 2015, she played the role of Nimmy in the romantic comedy Dilliwali Zaalim Girlfriend cast alongside Divyendu Sharma, Jackie Shroff, and Prachi Mishra. The movie, however, opened to negative reviews. Playing the role of an Assamese woman, Ira was seen in the 2015 drama Aisa Yeh Jahaan opposite music band Euphoria’s front man Palash Sen. The movie about a couple struggling to survive in Mumbai sees Ira portraying the role of a materialistic wife for which she won the Best Actress Award at the 3rd Indian Cine International Film Festival. The actor was then cast in a supporting role in Gauri Shinde’s next, the comedy drama Dear Zindagi alongside Alia Bhatt, Kunal Kapoor, Angad Bedi, and Shah Rukh Khan.
