Liam Hemsworth is an Australian actor who is well known for his role as Chris Taylor in the TV series Neighbours. He has also portrayed the character of Gale Hawthorne in the popular movie series,
The Hunger Games (2012) .
Early Life
Born in Australia to Craig Hemsworth and Leonie, Liam has two brothers,
Chris, and Luke, who are actors as well. Liam`s maternal grandfather was a Dutch immigrant while his other ancestry lineage includes Scottish, Irish, English, and German descendants. When Liam was 8, his family relocated to Philip Island, where he spent most of his time with his brothers. It was in 2009 that Liam, along with his brother Chris, moved to the United States to pursue a career in acting. Liam admits that there is healthy competition amongst him and his brothers when it comes to acting.
Personal Life
Liam started dating his co-star
Miley Cyrus while filming for The
Last Song in 2009. After three years of courtship, the couple announced their engagement in 2012. However, they separated in September 2013. In October 2016, Cyrus confirmed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that the two had reconciled and were once again engaged. The couple tied the knot in a ceremony in Tennessee in December 2018. However, less than a year later they announced their separation which was finalised in January 2020.
Television Career
After arriving in the United States, Liam and Chris stayed in the guest house of Chris` manager, William Ward. While Chris participated in school plays, in his initial days in New York, Liam laid low. It was later that Liam decided to follow his brother`s footstep and started participating in high school plays. At the age of 16, Liam managed to retain an agent and also gave his first audition.
Liam later made guest appearances on the shows McLeod`s Daughters, and Home and Away. Soon, in the second week of July 2007, Liam started shooting for the Australian soap opera, Neighbours. He portrayed the character of Josh Taylor, a paraplegic athlete who falls in love with Bridget Parker (played by Eloise Mignon). Later in 2008, Hemsworth appeared in the children`s television show, The Elephant Princess. He played the role of Marcus, the lead guitarist of the protagonist`s band. Liam was later seen in the TV series Satisfaction.
Movie Career
In 2009 Liam appeared in two movies
Knowing, which is directed
Alex Proyas and Chirstopher Smith`s Triangle. A year later, in 2010. Hemsworth was supposed to be a part of the multi-starer movie,
The Expendables. However, his character was removed from the script. Later, Hemsworth went on to star in
The Expendables 2 that released in 2012.
A few hours later after Hemsworth learned that his character in The Expendables was scrapped, he received a call from director
Kenneth Branagh. Kenneth called Liam and asked him to do a test for the lead role in his movie
Thor (2011); the role was eventually bagged by Liam`s brother,
Chris Hemsworth.
Soon, Hemsworth starred in the 2010 drama
The Last Song, playing the character of Will Blakelee, the love interest of Veronica Miller (played by
Miley Cyrus). Liam also appeared in the music video for Miley Cyrus`s song, When I Look at You. In March 2010, Liam was listed on the Details magazine`s list of `The Next Generation of Hollywood`s Leading Men.` In the same month it was also confirmed that Liam will be starring in
Chuck Russel`s 3D action film, Arabian Nights. Apparently, Liam was also offered a role in the movie, Nothern Lights, after
Taylor Lautner backed out from the project.
In 2011 it was confirmed that Hemsworth would be a part of the movie
The Hunger Games (2012). The movie received positive reviews from the critics and went on to become a worldwide hit. He also starred in the movie Love and Honor that released in 2011 co-starring
Aimee Teegarden and
Teresa Palmer. Hemsworth later went on to appear in movies such as
Empire State alongside
Emma Roberts, and in Paranoia with
Amber Heard,
Gary Oldman, and
Harrison Ford. He also reprised his role of Gale Hawthorne in
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire(2013),
The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 1 (2014) and
Part 2 (2015).
The year 2015 saw him play a role opposite none other than
Kate Winslet, in the drama film
The Dressmaker. It was followed up by the sequel to the blockbuster Independence Day (1996),
Independence Day: Resurgence. Hemsworth was away from the screen for three years after that, with his next project being the romantic comedy
Isn`t It Romantic (2019).
