One of the most popular actors in Tamil cinema, Ravi Mohan, better known his screen name Jayam Ravi has carved a niche for himself for being a versatile actor who plays all kinds of roles with panache. A testimony to this is his screen name, he portrayed the role of a boy next door in Jayam to perfection and earned the name `Jayam Ravi.` Some of his other successful films include M. Kumaran Son Of Mahalakshmi (2004), Santhosh Subramaniam (2008), Peranmai (2009), Thani Oruvan (2015) and Miruthan (2016).

Early Life
Born and raised in Chennai, Ravi is the son of Mohan, a leading film editor in the South Indian film industry and Varalakshmi. The actor has two siblings; his elder brother Mohan Raja is a film director and he has a sister named Roja who is a dentist. Ravi went to Jawahar Vidyalaya School in Ashok Nagar, Chennai and later pursued his graduation degree in Visual Communications from Loyola College, Chennai. Coming from a family with a strong background in the film industry, Ravi had a keen interest in films from a very young age. Before making his debut as an actor, Ravi worked as an assistant director; he assisted director Suresh Krishna for Aalavandhan featuring the superstar, Kamal Haasan in the lead role. Apart from acting and direction, the actor is also a trained Bharatnatyam dancer. He studied dancing under, Nalini Balakrishnan and performed his arangetram at the age of 12.

Jayam Ravi is married to Aarthi, the duo tied the knot in June 2009.

Movie Career
Jayam Ravi started his acting career at a very young age, he starred as a child artist in the 1993 Telugu film, Bava Bavamaridi starring Krishnam Raju, Suman, Jayasudha, and Malashri. The film, which was the remake of the Tamil film, Pandithurai was a blockbuster at the box office and following its huge success it was later remade in Hindi as Bandhan and in Kannada as Baava Baamaida. After starring in another Telugu film as a child artist in 1994, Jayam Ravi made his debut as the lead in 2003 with Jayam and immediately rose to fame. The film directed by his brother Mohan Raja and co-starring Sadha received wide critical appreciation and emerged to box office blockbuster.

After a successful start to his acting career, Jayam Ravi continued to ride on his new found stardom and gave yet another scintillating performance in M. Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi where the played the role of a boxer who is extremely attached to his mother. The film co-starring Asin Thottumkal, Prakash Raj and Nadhiya was the remake of the super hit Telugu film, Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi featuring Ravi Teja, Asin and Prakash Raj in the lead roles. The film was critically acclaimed and Ravi for his brilliant performance won his maiden Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor.

In 2005, the actor had two releases, Daas and Mazhai. Whilst the former directed by the debutant director, Babu Yogeswaran was a hit, the latter received mostly negative reviews and was an average earner. The actor his next major hit in 2008 as he starred in family romantic drama, Santosh Subramaniam. The film directed by his Mohan Raja also feature Genelia D`Souza, Prakash Raj and Sayaji Shinde in pivotal roles. It was based on the relationship of a father and son where the son hates his father for dotting him and intervening in his life ambitions. Upon release, Santosh Subramaniam received positive reviews and got a nomination for Best Film at the 56th Filmfare Awards South.

The following year, Jayam Ravi starred in the critically acclaimed Peranmai, a war adventure film, which was written and directed by S.P. Jananathan. The film based on the 1972 Soviet film, A zori zdes tikhie had Ravi playing the role of a tribal forest officer. Upon release, the film received mixed to positive reviews and it was later dubbed in Hindi as Kasam Hindustan Ki and in Telugu as Ranadheera. For his brilliant role, the actor won the Edison Award for Best Actor as well as a nomination at the Vijay Award and Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

In his first release of 2011, the actor appeared in a cameo in the K.V. Anand directed Tamil political thriller, KO. Later in the year, the actor collaborated with director Prabhudeva for the romantic drama, Engeyum Kadhal co-starring Hansika Motwani. The film, which revolves around a young girl living in France who falls in love with a boy who comes from India got mixed to reviews. Upperstall.com stated, "the film seems to be a straight rip off from Billy Wilder`s Love in the Afternoon starring Gary Cooper and Audrey Hepburn, which was made way back in 1957."

With no release to his name in 2012, Jayam Ravi played a cameo role in Ninaithathu Yaaro in 2014 and later in the same year he played the role of a revolutionist in the Tamil action film, Nimirndhu Nil directed by P. Samuthirakani. The film co-starring Sarathkumar, Amala Paul, Soori and Ragini Dwivedi received mostly positive reviews and it was simultaneously remade in Telugu as Janda Pai Kapiraju with Nani playing the lead role.

The actor had quite a busy year in 2015; after more than two decades Jayam Ravi made a comeback to Telugu cinema as he did a cameo in Janda Pai Kapiraju directed by Samuthirakani. After featuring in two back-to-back flop films viz. Romeo Juliet and Sakalakala Vallavan, he starred in the critically acclaimed Thani Oruvan. The film directed by Mohan Raja also featured Nayantara and Arvind Swamy in lead roles. It got mostly reviews from the critics as well as emerged to be a commercial hit; it grossed 105 crore INR at the box office and Ravi for his brilliant performance as an IPS Officer won several awards including Edison Award for Best Actor, IIFA Utsavam Award for Best Actor and SIIMA Awards for Best Actor (Critics) and Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor - South.

In his only release in 2016, Jayam Ravi collaborated with director Shakti Soundar Rajan for the first ever Tamil zombie thriller film, Mirtuhan. The film co-starring Lakshmi Menon received mixed critical reviews, with Sudhir Srinivasan from The Hindu stating it as `an inconsistent zombie film with excessive melodrama.` Jayam Ravi started his campaign in 2017 with the Tamil supernatural thriller Bogan directed by R. Lakshmanan. The film co-starring Arvind Swamy, Hansika Motwani and Akshara Gowda despite receiving average reviews turned out to be a commercial hit. His other release of the year includes Vanamagan, an action adventure directed by A.L. Vijay and co-starring Sayyeshaa Saigal. . His 2018 releases include Tik Tik Tik and Adanga Maru. His other releases include Thumbaa (2019), Comali (2019), Bhoomi (2021) and Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022), Agilan (2022) and Iraivan (2022)and Ponniyin Selvan: II (2023).
