Movie Career
As an Actor
It is quite ironic that an actor of Kevin Costner`s caliber had a slow start to his career; his debut film Sizzle Beach, U.S.A (1981), an independent film directed by Richard Brander did not garner any attention. His subsequent films Night Shift (1982), Stacy`s Knights (1983), and Shadows Run Black (1984) too were either flops or average hits and Costner barely got any recognition. It was in 1985 that Costner got his first major breakthrough as the starred in the American comedy film Fandango, which marked Kevin Reynolds` directorial debut. The film co-starring Judd Nelson, Sam Robards, and Chuck Bush got favorable critical reviews. Quentin Tarantino stated, "Fandango is one of the best directorial debuts in the history of cinema. I saw Fandango five times at the movie theater and it only played for a fucking week, all right."

Costner`s next major hit came in 1987 as director Brian De Palma cast him alongside Charles Martin Smith, Andy Garcia, Robert De Niro, and Sean Connery in the American gangster film The Untouchables. The film was a massive commercial hit and it got nominations for four Academy Awards. Four years later, in 1990, Costner starred and directed the Academy Award-winning film Dances with Wolves. The film, which was based on the 1988 book of the same name by Michael Blake details the story of a Union Army lieutenant who travels to the American frontier to find a post. The film, which won seven Academy Awards and the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Drama was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Costner followed his success with Dances with Wolves with yet another stellar performance in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) where he played the titular role of the English folktale legend. The film, which is noted for its Grammy Award winning theme song, `Everything I Do, I Do It for You` by Bryan Adams was the second-highest-grossing film that year. The same year, Costner collaborated with director Oliver Stone for the American conspiracy thriller JFK which is based on the events leading to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The film co-starring Kevin Bacon , Gary Oldman, Michael Rooker , Tommy Lee Jones and Laurie Metcalf received wide critical acclaim and won eight Academy Awards nominations.

Over the next few years, the actor featured in films The Bodyguard (1992), Wyatt Earp (1994), Tin Cup (1996), and The Postman (1997) before starring in the commercially hit romantic drama film Message in a Bottle. The film directed by Luis Mandoki and co-starring Robin Wright Penn, John Savage, Illeana Douglas and Paul Newman was based on 1998 novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. Coming into the new millennium, Costner had back-to-back flops viz. Thirteen Days (2000), 3000 Miles to Graceland (2001) and Dragonfly (2002). He got his next major hit in 2007 in the American psychological thriller Mr. Brooks directed by Bruce A. Evans. The film co-starring Demi Moore, Dane Cook, and William Hurt received mostly favorable reviews from the critics and inspired a modest cult following.

In 2013, Costner featured in the DC comics-based superhero film Man of Steel directed by Zack Snyder, . The film based on the fictional character Superman received mixed to positive reviews but emerged to be a blockbuster. Continuing his association with Superman film, the actor appeared in a cameo in the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice starring Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg and Laurence Fishburne. The film opened to positive reviews and grossed 873 million USD worldwide. His other release of the year was the Hidden Figures, an American biological drama directed by Theodore Melfi. The film received wide positive critical reviews and won many laurels including three Oscars and two Golden Globe nominations. Costner`s 2017 release includes Molly`s Game directed by Aaron Sorkin.

As a Director
Costner made his directorial debut in 1990 with Dances with Wolves for which he won an Academy Award for Best Director. Following the huge success of the film, much was expected from him with his next directorial venture, The Postman (1997) but the film was a major commercial failure and Costner was drubbed by the critics. The actor-turned-director silenced his critics with his next film Open Range (2003), an American western which earned positive reviews as well as performed well at the box office.

As a Producer
Apart from acting, Kevin Costner has produced several films. He made his production debut with Revenge (1990) directed by Tony Scott. TV Career
