Carla Gugino is an American actress most famous for her roles of Ingrid Cortez in
Robert Rodriguez`s
Spy Kids movie trilogy, Sally Jupiter/Silk Spectre in Zack Snyder`s comic book cult classic
Watchmen (2009), Lucille in
Sin City (2005), Amanda Daniels in seasons 3 and 7 of the Television series
Entourage (2004-2011), the titular character in Karen Sisco (2003-2004) and Dr. Molly Anne Caffrey on the science-fiction TV series Threshold (2005). Gugino is also tasked with playing Kelor in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
Early Life
Carla N. Gugino was born on August 29, 1971, in Sarasota, Florida. She`s one of the three children of an orthodontist father and a homemaker mother. She was just two when her parents divorced and Gugino had to bounce back and forth between Sarasota and Paradise, California, where her mother lived. She moved in permanently with her mother when she was five. Gugino has described experiencing a contrasting childhood living with her parents, with a sophisticated rich kid lifestyle with her dad and a hippy lifestyle with her mom. Carla was a straight-A student throughout high school and graduated as valedictorian.
Carol Merrill, the host of the 60`s TV show `Let`s Make a Deal`, is Gugino`s aunt. It was Carol who introduced Gugino to the art & media world by suggesting that she enroll into acting classes. Gugino began modeling at age 15 after being discovered by a major modeling agency which sent her to New York. She, however, decided to leave New York for Los Angeles and began modeling and enrolling in an acting class there.
Television Career
Gugino started off television in the late 80s and was seen in episodes of popular 90s television series like Saved by the Bell (1989-1993), The Wonder Years (1988-1993), Doogie Howser, M.D. (1989-1993), Who`s the Boss? (1984-1992) and Falcon Crest (1981-1990).
She has been a constant fixture on television till date, with shows such as Spin City (1996-2002) where she appeared as
Michael J. Fox`s love interest, Ashley Schaeffer. She was also seen as Dr. Gina Simon in Chicago Hope (1999-2000).
Her first lead role on television was the titular character in Karen Sisco (2003-2004), where she played a sexy but tough United States Marshal. The show got cancelled after seven episodes.
Gugino next portrayed Dr. Molly Anne Caffrey on the sci-fi television show, Threshold (2005-2006). It dealt with a secret government team tasked with establishing the first contact with extraterrestrials. On Entourage (2007-2010) she was Amanda Daniels, Vince`s sexy new secretary. She played the role of Abby, the love interest for
David Duchovny`s character Hank Moody, in the fourth season of Showtime`s Emmy award-winning Californication (2010).
In Political Animals (2012) Gugino co-starred with
Sigourney Weaver,
Ciaran Hinds and
Ellen Burstyn. The USA Network TV mini-series was critically acclaimed and ended after six episodes. On Wayward Pines (2015-2016) Gugino starred as Kate Hewson. The show had
Matt Dillon in the lead with her. Over the next few years she played leading roles in the comedy drama series Roadies (2016), crime drama series Jett (2019) and the two supernatural horror series The Haunting of Hill House (2018) and The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020).
Movie Career
Gugino`s film career began with a role in the now iconic Troop Beverly Hills (1989). From there, she went on to star in This Boy`s Life (1993) with
Robert DeNiro and
Leonardo DiCaprio. She also starred alongside
Nicolas Cage in
Brian De Palma`s Snake Eyes (1998). One of Gugino`s most prominent movie roles came in the year 2001, where she portrayed Ingrid Cortez in the Spy Kids. The movie was directed by
Robert Rodriguez. She reprised her role in two more sequels, Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams (2002) and
Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003).
Her other prominent movie roles include The Singing Detective (2003) where she starred with

Garry Marshall was critically trashed. In Mr. Popper`s Penguins (2011) Gugino starred alongside
Jim Carrey. For Suckerpunch (2011) she reunited with the
Watchmen director
Zack Snyder. She starred opposite Dwayne Johnson again in the commercial hit
San Andreas (2015). In The Space Between Us (2017) Gugino shared screen space with
Gary Oldman and
Asa Butterfield. The movie had a disastrous box office run.
Gugino`s upcoming movies include Gerald`s Game (2017), which is based on the twisted novel of the same name from
Stephen King and San Andreas 2 (2017). In 2018, she starred in the sci-fi thriller Elizabeth Harvest.
Stage Career
Gugino made her Broadway debut in Roundabout`s revival of
Arthur Miller`s "After The Fall" where she received an Outer Critics` Circle Award nomination and a Theater World award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. She also appeared on Broadway in Eugene O`Neil`s "Desire Under the Elms," directed by Tony Award recipient Robert Falls. And most recently, Gugino was seen in the Broadway play "The Road to Mecca" alongside Rosemary Harris and Jim Dale; and opposite Blythe Danner in Roundabout Theater Company`s production of the Tennessee Williams "Suddenly Last Summer."
Singing Career
Gugino played Madame Vera Gorski in Zack Snyder`s 2011 action-fantasy film
Sucker Punch alongside
Abbie Cornish and
Emily Browning. She sang a duet with co-star Oscar Isaac, which appeared in the end credits and on the film`s soundtrack.
Personal Life
Gugino has been dating writer/producer/director Sebastian Gutierrez since 2005. Both of them do not believe in marriage and Gugino had stated in 2009 that they had no plans to marry.
