Isha Talwar rose to fame with an award-winning performance in her lead role debut in the Malayalam film
Thattathin Marayathu (2012). Apart from predominant work in the Malayalam film industry, the actress has featured in a handful of movies in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu cinema. Before making her lead role debut with
Thattathin Marayathu, she featured as a child actor in her acting debut movie
Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai in 2000. Her most promising roles were seen in movies like
Gunde Jaari Gallanthayyinde,
Bangalore Days, and
Bhaskar the Rascal. This multiple award winning actress has appeared in various commercials, and television serials too.
Early Life
Born in 1987, Isha is based out of Mumbai, and started her career with modelling before venturing into television series and movies. She is the daughter of director-actor Vinod Talwar who works for Boney Kapoor`s production company. Isha graduated from St. Xavier`s College, Mumbai in 2008. She is a trained dancer from choreographer Terence Lewis`s dance school, and also became a tutor in the dance studio.
Movie Career
Isha debuted in the film industry as a child actor with the 2000 Hindi film
Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, in which she played
Aishwarya Rai`s sister. However, her debut in a lead role came with the Malayalam film
Thattathin Marayathu in 2012 opposite
Nivin Pauly. In the movie, she plays a young Muslim woman who falls in love with a Hindu boy leading to a huge inter-caste conflict. The role won her Asianet Film Award for Best Star Pair (shared with Nivin Pauly), South Indian International Movie Award for Best Female Debutant, Vanitha Film Awards for Best Female Debut and SIIMA Award for Best Female Debutant. She also was nominated for Asianet Award for Best Female New Face of the Year. In the same year, she featured in
I Love Me, a Malayalam thriller film about a high profile businessman who hires two killers to save his sinking business. Directed by
B. Unnikrishnan, the movie also starred
Unni Mukundan and
Asif Ali in lead roles, whereas
Anoop Menon and
Kadambari Jethwani played supporting roles. Isha also starred in a 4 minute romantic short movie titled The Restaurant Couple, directed by Bahaish Kapoor, opposite
Prabuddh Dayama.
In 2013, Isha starred in two movies - a Tamil comedy film titled
Thillu Mullu, and a Telugu romantic film
Gunde Jaari Gallanthayyinde. In the latter, she starred alongside
Nithin and
Nithya Menen, with the plot of the film revolving around mistaken identity. For
Gunde Jaari Gallanthayyinde, Isha was nominated for South Indian International Movie Award for Best Female Debutant. The movie was a super-hit and was remade in Kannada as Khushi Khushiyagi (2015).
Even though Isha didn`t receive any awards or nominations in 2014, she starred in five movies out of which one was a Telugu film titled
Maine Pyaar Kiya in the role of Shalini. Known for starring in romantic comedies, she added one more to her list with
Ulsaha Committee, a movie that revolved around a school dropout who lands in trouble while performing scientific inventions. In the film directed by
Akku Akbar, Isha played the character of Rosemary, opposite
Jayaram,
Sheela,
Baburaj and
Kalabhavan Shajon.
Bangalore days was another prominent movie in the year, that gained Isha praises for her role as an air hostess. Written and directed by
Anjali Menon, this super hit film gathered multiple awards. Isha was part of an ensemble cast including successful actors like
Nazriya Nazim,
Nivin Pauly,
Dulquer Salmaan,
Fahadh Faasil,
Parvathy and
Nithya Menen in principal roles. Bangalore Days was remade in Tamil as
Bangalore Naatkal in 2016.
After successive releases in 2014, Isha starred in two Malayalam films in the next year. One was
Bhaskar the Rascal, a super hit romantic comedy film starring
Mammootty and
Nayantara, with Isha as part of the supporting cast including
J. D. Chakravarthy,
Sanoop Santhosh, Baby Anikha, and
Janardhanan. Her other film in the year was
Two Countries, again a rom-com, in which she played the role of Simran, a disabled woman. Isha then starred in the Telugu movie
Raja Cheyyi Vesthe (2016), a thriller directed by debutante
Pradeep and produced by
Sai Korrapati under the production house Varahi Chalana Chitram. In the year, she also featured in the Tamil film Meendum Oru Kadhal Kadhai.
Isha`s 2017 projects include the Hindi movie
Chef, adaptation of the Hollywood Movie (
Chef), alongside
Saif Ali Khan, while the other project has Isha playing a cameo in the
Salman Khan starrer
Tubelight, an Indo Chinese movie venture. Her other notable releases include
Article 15 (2019), Kaamyaab (2020), Ginny Weds Sunny (2020) and
Toofaan (2021).
Television career
Isha first appeared in the second season of the TV series Rishtey in 2010 for one episode. She then was seen in a music video with
Hrithik Roshan for the Just Dance competition. She has been a celebrity guest in Malayalam TV series like Comedy stars and D 4 Dance. She also featured in the Malayalam series Laughing Villa. Her 2019 release includes Magic Love, directed by Vijay Kumar Konda. She then appeared in
Satyamev Jayate 2 (2021).
